We had a blast representing @ehs.recruiting at the 2026 @nationalrestaurantshow !

You never know who or what you'll find there!

We saw demos, met virtual friends IRL for the first time, reconnected with others, and saw some amazing exhibits as we keep a pulse on the industry and where it's headed.

The future of the industry is bright because thousands are striving to continue improving it in every way!

Meat substitutes are out. Automation and AI-driven efficiency is in.

That was one of my big takeaways from the @National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago (May 16–19). With 2,000+ exhibitors and over 50,000 attendees, it’s the largest hospitality convention in the Western Hemisphere—and one of the best places to get a real pulse on the industry.

I came in as a curious outsider—through the lens of Takeout 25 NFP and 20fy.ai—trying to understand where things are heading.

Leading up to the show, I spoke with several anxious independent restaurant owners. The theme was consistent:
- Rising costs
- Limited ability to raise prices
- Pressure on already thin margins
So it was encouraging (and validating) to see such a strong focus on efficiency through AI and automation across the show floor.

At the same time, sustainability continues to hold its ground, with a strong presence from packaging and container providers.

After 50,000+ steps, 70+ meaningful conversations with operators and partners, and plenty of great food, a few things stood out:
- The push for efficiency is real—and urgent
- Larger POS and delivery platforms continue to consolidate
- There’s a clear opportunity for affordable, easy-to-use, niche solutions that solve specific problems for independent operators

That last point resonates deeply with what we’re building at 20fy.ai—helping restaurants turn customer feedback into insights and actions that actually fix and grow the business.

It complements the industry’s efficiency push.

I left energized by the possibilities ahead and more convinced than ever that independent restaurants need simple, practical tools to thrive.

You never know what you're going to find on Day 3 of the National Restaurant Association Show!

🍍 I got on my photo game with the one and only, Shawn Walchef
🍍 Filmed some content with the amazing Elizabeth Doss
🍍 Had a great chat with Naki Ufuk Soyturk
🍍 Got over to the Royal Cup booth to see Pooch Rivera and Carl Fiadini of @walkintalkshow
🍍 Got to catch a panel featuring Bruce Nelson & Jordan Silverman
🍍 Caught up a bit with Matthew Vascellaro and met Jeffrey Fisher
🍍 Always great to see the King of Fish, himself, Michael Ungaro
🍍 And finally, I met a fellow pineapple person!

Sometimes great conversations need an ice breaker, and going into pineapple mode seems to have that effect for me.

Great show. Three days of non-stop action.

I am sure Day 4 will be great, but we're out!

Until next year, NRA fam!

Day 1 at the 2026 National Restaurant Association Show is in the books!

We started the day by catching a marketing Q&A panel featuring Troy Hooper, David "Rev" Ciancio, Julie Wade, CFE, and Deric Rosenbaum. Operators got to ask any marketing questions they had, and got answers on the spot!

Then, most of the day was spent freestyling, taking in the show and layout, and bumping into people all over the floor.

It was great to meet many more of the @calibbqmedia Rising Tides group in person for the first time after connecting virtually for so long! The group representing has to be twice the size of last year!

Looking forward to Day 2! 🍍 🥳
With pineapple flavor added. 😉
