Practice. Practice. Practice. As an athlete, I lived in the gym. As a cinematographer, that same mindset became testing. Before every project, I test. It’s how I prepare, build trust, and answer questions before stepping on set. This test taught me 3 things: • I was walking into a warm environment built on trust. • The Vespid 2 Primes had the best balance of size and character. ( My vote was Tokina) • The location was packed with mixed lighting, which made it less about making it look pretty and more about figuring out what worked. It also reminded me of 2 things about myself: • I can get tunnel vision, so having a deck keeps me grounded. • I need to remember to eat. I get so locked in, I forget. And a quick disclaimer: This wasn’t final lighting—or even the look we were going for. The goal was compositions, lens character, and seeing the differences between lenses. We showed up with cameras and a small lighting package. Sometimes tests aren’t pretty, but they answer all the questions. That’s the point. Testing is where you experiment, solve problems, and build the recipe.

Reflections from Slice One of the best parts of filmmaking is getting to collaborate with talented people and create something meaningful together. But great films aren’t built on creativity alone. They’re built on preparation, communication, and adaptability. Here are a few lessons from shooting Slice: 1. Have a reference film.
Our references were Love Lies Bleeding and Showgirls. They became our creative North Star. (See last slide) 2. Define your visual language.
Handheld, Steadicam, locked-off—every choice should support the story. (See last slide) 3. Build a deck.
Visual references help everyone get on the same page faster. (See last slide) 4. Bring your own meal.
If you have dietary restrictions or a sensitive stomach, don’t leave it to chance. 5. Test your ideas.
The best place to fail is before the shoot. (Slide 6) 6. Be kind.
Long days are easier when you’re someone people enjoy working with. 7. Expect pivots.
Something will go wrong. Be ready to adapt. 8. Explore.
I always say, “Good things happen when I go outside.” Try the unusual angle. Take the risk. You might find something special. What’s the best lesson you’ve learned from working on a short film?

We did it! SLICED is wrapped (been wrapped). Took our time to catch our breath over here, but this one deserves praise. Every indie short is its own mini miracle and this one is no different.
