Very grateful to have a new story in the fall ‘26 issue of @northamericanreview!

“Dr. Slop” started with a bit @rmhladio and I did in college — what if a professor thought their student was the second coming of their favorite author? Then I spent six months in a two-person Tristram Shandy book club (as one does), lurked around on academic Substack for a bit, one thing led to another…and here we are.

Slide 3 easter egg: @wesbyers1, @j.g.fuller, and @victoria_18_smith all appear as commenters as a thank-you (or punishment??? idk) for reading an early draft :)

Thanks NAR!!!

Come by Sat morn for coffee & activities starting at 10 am.

No Little League on Labor Day but there is plenty of baseball art.

If you are in Nashville for the weekend, come hang with us. We’ll have lemonade, coffee, and our baseball card craft table out for kids (and adults), and we invite you to view our exhibition of art about baseball entitled, AUGIE GARRIDO or GONFALONS FOR THE GRAND OLD GAME. We’ll add your creation to the show.

It is not the art and poetry in baseball but the baseball in poetry and art.

Featuring contributions from James Allen, Bill Adams, Elise Drake, Jonathan Edelhuber, Garrett Fuller, James Gallagher, Jiwoong Jang, Gregory Klassen, Dan Mandelbaum, Anthony Miler, Josh Schultz, Thomas Sturgill, Nacho Valle and others. (Exhibition runs through Sept 19th. )

Opening tonight: IIn baseball, there are saints and demons, there is artistry and poetry galore, drama and dance on a daily basis. There are thrills and suspense, comedy and tragedy and a 150-year-old historical narrative prone to long, quiet, fallow stretches. Riddled with intrigue, misdeeds and heroism, with Hall of Famers who were well known cheaters, and Hall of Fame worthy players barred from Valhalla for breaking the rules. We’ve carried on with the national game through war and peace. It is among the most natural things we knew how to do here in America: play baseball and cheer on our heroes who do something perfectly useless and simultaneously as singularly important as anything our culture offers.

An exhibition of art about baseball featuring contributions from James Allen, Bill Adams, Elise Drake, Jonathan Edelhuber, Garrett Fuller, James Gallagher, Jiwoong Jang, Gregory Klassen, Dan Mandelbaum, Anthony Miler, Josh Schultz, Thomas Sturgill, Nacho Valle and others.

Come have a brewskie or lemonade and celebrate the art of baseball. Sunny will have her craft table out for the kiddos.

ZieherSmith is in the AMEC Building at 1207 King Hollands Ave btwn Music Row and 12th Ave S. Free parking on street or complimentary validation for back lot.

“Within the Frame” is a new series we’re beginning here at SouthDocs. The goal of this series is to highlight the documentary photography work being created by our students, faculty, and staff.

This first collection focuses on S ST 534, taught this spring by Assistant Professor of Practice in Doc Expression Shiraz Ahmed. Ahmed tasked his students with producing a documentary photo story in 16 - 20 images. Their objective was to showcase their ability to connect with people and groups and portray complex issues through the photographic medium.

Undergraduate and graduate students built relationships across the south working with community leaders, artists, other busy students, food and restaurant specialists and many more folks.

Our next look is at “How We Remember and How We Move Forward” by MA Southern Studies graduate Garrett Fuller. Fuller is a scholar and photographer from Nashville, Tennessee. He has a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MA in Southern Studies from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi.

------------------------------------------

“How We Remember and How We Move Forward” explores the organizers and participants involved in Behind the Big House, a public history program based in Holly Springs, Mississippi. This initiative seeks to interpret the lives and conditions of enslaved people during the Antebellum period through educational demonstrations, local genealogy research, and dramatic readings.

To learn more about this project, visit southdocs.org/showcase or follow the link in our bio.

Our dear friend Garrett Fuller, @j.g.fuller, shared some beautiful perspectives from his time with us at Wall Doxey on Saturday. For his first official birding outing or documenting it, he captured the presence of collaborative learning in community. The misty, grey low-light made visual sightings difficult, with most canopy looks backlit by the cloud cover. The lighting paired with intermittent rain lended to a lovely impromptu birding by ear, and some botanizing on edge habitats, ecotones, and invasive species.

Cheers to Garrett, @j.g.fuller, for sharing and kudos to his fascinating and growing body of work around community memorializations of shared histories here in Holly Springs. Keep tuned for his work with @southernstudies and hopefully 🤞 some groovy collaborations with @hollywild38635

Happy Film Friday! Do you know about the ‘five – shot method?’ This technique incorporates five types of shots to tell a story. This can help ensure a narrative flow and provide diverse footage for editing.
