The exhibition runs October 2nd to November 12th, 2026.

Artists At Work (AAW) invests in artists and their communities, helping to seed and cultivate sustainable work and local partnerships that leverage creativity for community impact. Since 2020, Artists At Work has employed 98 artists and culture workers across 12 states to work in partnership with over 100 cultural and community organizations, reaching and engaging thousands of community members across the country. AAW believes artists’ ability to thrive creatively and financially are key contributors to the civic and cultural well-being of the places they call home.

In Indianapolis, local AAW Artists Andre Parnell, Ash Robinson, Bryn Jackson, and Mariah Ivey are bringing their skills and creative thinking to four local community partners — Arts for Lawrence, Little Red Door, CAMi and the Center for Black Literature and Culture at the Indianapolis Central Public Library — to serve their communities through artistic civic engagement projects. This exhibition gives a look into each artists’ practice as it has evolved over the past year in the program.

Meet AAW Artist Bryn Jackson!

Bryn Jackson is an artist, curator, and cultural advisor based in Indianapolis whose practice — grounded in ecological justice and institutional accountability — positions nature as a medium to confront complex histories and foster connectivity. As an interdisciplinary artist, he unites sculpture, photography, time-based media, arts administration, community engagement, and habitat design to produce works that promote environmental restoration and collective healing.

Bryn Jackson’s Apung Iru’s Abundance is a land art and environmental restoration project along Bean Creek, on the campus of Big Car Collaborative’s Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis (CAMi). Together, they are working to restore a stretch of the creek that is currently overrun by invasive plant species, stabilize the eroding stream bank, mitigate flooding, and create healthier habitats for wildlife and residents alike.

Bryn’s inspiration for this project comes from his Filipino heritage and the cosmology of Apung Iru, an immortal river deity from the precolonial Philippines. Apung Iru represents both the power and generosity of rivers, reminding us that water is both a living presence and a shared responsibility. This story offers a cultural framework for understanding ecological care as reciprocal: when we nourish the land, it nourishes us in return.

As an artist, Bryn’s practice is rooted in ecology and relationality. He often works with living or otherwise organic materials to make visible the connections between environmental health, current events, and colonial history. Apung Iru’s Abundance brings these threads together in a tangible way: using art as a tool to strengthen community relationships to place—and to one another—through the shared act of caring for the land.

Spaces of Encounter has officially come to a close.

Over the past few months, this exhibition stood as a love letter to Black imagination in public space.

As the gallery walls came down, I’m left with an interesting juxtaposition. Today marks America’s 250th anniversary, while we also approach more than 400 years since the beginning of colonial slavery in what became the United States.

Those histories exist together.

What this exhibition reminded me is that Black imagination has always exceeded oppression. It has continuously envisioned new ways of belonging, building, caring, and creating public life.

If public art shapes how we understand our cities, perhaps imagination shapes how we understand our nation.

Thank you to everyone who visited, questioned, reflected, and dreamed with us.

The exhibition in Philly has closed and yet the work of making a better future continues.

Today is the final viewing of SPACES OF ENCOUNTER. We thank everyone who came or contributed to its success since its Philadelphia debut on May 6 showcasing the works of over a dozen public artists, architects, and researchers.

The show was co-curated by Rokh Research & Design Studio founder Danicia Monet Malone (PhD ’26) and Alyse Tucker (New York University, MA ‘26), in collaboration with exhibition strategist Bryn Jackson under the close supervision of our talented veteran Exhibitions Manager Adam Blumberg.

This summit brings together 300+ organizations and participants from across the Midwest for a week of exhibitions, public programs, workshops, print jams, city explorations, and conversations focused on strengthening regional creative networks and building collective futures.

Public events included “States in Play” at the Valade Family Gallery and “Facing Present Dangers / Building Future Worlds” at the Boyer-Campbell Building, alongside the Books & Multiples Fair featuring artist books, zines, prints, posters, and other artist-made works from organizations across the region.
