“Satrangī,” a semi-formal modernized Indian womenswear collection, boldly redefines the traditional notions of modesty and celebrates the vibrant spirit of women. The name itself, derived from Punjabi for “colorful,” encapsulates the essence of the line: a riot of hues, patterns, and silhouettes that challenge the status quo. Embracing the ethos of empowerment, the collection is designed for women unafraid to stand out, proud of their bodies and identities. Each piece is meticulously crafted to accentuate femininity while defying conventional norms, offering a fresh take on Indian attire that resonates with the modern, confident woman.

At MAND, modesty isn’t about concealing, but rather about expressing oneself boldly and authentically.

I am so excited to finally share our collaboration for Rupi Kaur’s world tour. Designing her costumes allowed me creative liberty to dream completely unique looks without constraint of cohesion or the commercial aspect.

We met in NYC to do a fabric sourcing trip. We looked at so many fabrics that I would’ve normally overlooked. It was an eye opening experience and I was so excited to get back and start sketching and creating. We both wanted glitter, feathers, colours, and overall drama!

We met virtually a few times before the final fittings, but I loved our creative jam sessions. I loved how Rupi challenged me, most people have pigeonholed me into being the “South Asian designer” that designs solely for South Asians.

I couldn’t have done this collection without the help of my team who worked relentlessly with me on getting all of the looks done in time (along with balancing client orders). It was something new for all of us. I want to thank them for coming in early and staying behind with me and producing looks that were new to all of us . A special thank you to @arushi.the.person , @vasniya.m , @j_sleen , @pamkjassal , @semonerajkumar , Sandy and @megancheeatow for helping in the production process of the collection. Thank you to the marketing team @makeupbymadhavi , @moyojohol , and @hasikasuri11 for documenting the entire production process through out and even taking on some production roles. It was a long 3 months, but we pulled through and now we are starting on the European tour.

We all had little bursts of excitement while producing some of the pieces. We all had moments of “damn I didn’t know I could do this”.

I am so excited for the world to see all of the looks ! Looks that were created by two Punjabi women supporting one another on a grander scale. It’s important to show brown women claiming the space they deserve in a predominantly white fashion industry.
