For #UBCSE senior Jason Jiang, his 3D printer isn’t just a dorm-room gadget — it’s a tool for change. As one of #UBuffalo’s WNY Prosperity Fellows and intern at @thetoollibrary, he uses his skills to repair tools, reduce waste, and create community solutions. 🧰♻️

“I know that 3D printing, combined with continuous belief in a better world, can create solutions that outlive what our current lives tell us is possible,” says Jiang. 💙

🎉 Congrats to our very own purveyor of the finest 3D prints, Jason Jiang, on his feature in UBNow. As a WNY Prosperity Fellow, @universityatbuffalo senior, and Tool Library intern, Jason has been pushing the boundaries of what is possible with 3D printing and the value this new technology can bring to people’s everyday life.

Not only has Jason been able to print custom parts to repair Tool Library tools and keep them in use and out of the landfill for longer, Jason has brought his skills to our Dare to Repair Cafes to print replacement parts for decades old appliances, challenging the notion that our things are beyond repair.

When a tool manufacturer refuses to make replacement parts available, so you 3D print your own. 😈😈

There are nearly half a dozen @mantistillers in The Tool Library’s inventory and one of the most chronic problems is the plastic handles break. When we called customer service, they told us they don’t sell replacement handles. Enter @ja3onxjiang, UB student and 3D printing wunderkind. Jason was able to measure, model, and print a replacement handle onsite using The Tool Library’s 3D printer. 🖨️✨

Jason has made his model available online for free so replacement handles can be printed across the county or across the globe. (🔗 in our story)

While 3D printing can be a critical tool in extending the product life cycle of the things we own, we also need comprehensive and robust right to repair legislation at all levels to make planned obsolescence, like this mantis tiller, a thing of the past.

If you’re interested in learning more or supporting 3D printing initiatives at The Tool Library, please sign up for the 3D printing newsletter. (🔗 in our story)

Being a volunteer-powered organization means The Tool Library and our programs simply wouldn’t exist without the magnificent human beings who give of themselves to make what we do possible.

Every year at Gather, Garden + Grow we like to recognize the Tooligans and Community Partners who have gone above and beyond the call of tool duty. 🛠️

🏆 Congratulations to our 2024 Tooligans of the Year, Jason Jiang and Don Winkelman!

Jason joined us as a rising @universityatbuffalo sophomore and WNY Prosperity Fellow and helped us calculate our first ever comprehensive carbon savings in 2023. He has since brought the wonderful world of micro manufacturing and 3D printing to The Tool Library and its members.

You may recognize Don from his being at almost EVERY SINGLE Dare to Repair Cafe since those launched back in 2017. Don takes a never give up, never surrender approach to every repair he tackles and is always on the lookout for items that can be upcycled into The Tool Library’s inventory.

(and a very belated, but heartfelt congratulations to Bruce Weymouth and Wendy Lettieri, our Tooligans of the Year from 2023 who accepted their awards this year! 🎉)

🏆 Congratulations are also in order to our 2024 Community Partner of the Year, Rachel Di Domizio & Hannah Giarrizzo from the @universityatbuffalo Office of Student Engagement.

From an inaugural MLK Day of Service way back when to a first-of-its-kind community work study program that places students at The Tool Library, Rachel and Hannah embody what it means to be in service to others and we wouldn’t be where we are today without your partnership!

Thank you for everything you do friends!

Special shout out to our Ops Manager @lissa.roads who handcrafted these awards at @thefoundrybuffalo 🙌

Today was a great day with some amazing friends! I truly appreciate @ja3onxjiang & @valeriejuang for taking some time to volunteer at the CS53 Community Garden and Outdoor Learning Lab. We can only transform our communities together!

We composted over 100 fallen apples, picked some delicious ripe green apples, and sowed our late Spring 🌼 - Fall Garden! Join us Saturday/Sundays 1-5pm at 91 Winslow Ave.

BRB, 3D Printing the future at the TL 👽🖖

Our inaugural 3D printing Workshop was a success! Thanks to everyone who joined us for the first (of hopefully many) workshops dedicated to the marvelous feat of micromanufacturing. Special thanks to @universityatbuffalo student Jason Jiang for leading the workshop and sharing your passion for the potential 3D printing has to (literally) build community!

We got a crash course in what 3D printing is, how it works, and also brainstormed ideas on how The Tool Library can incorporate 3D printing into our operations and offerings to the community.

A special shout out to our friends at the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning for providing the funding to purchase our very first in-house 3D printer. Let the burgeoning basement makerspace commence! 🙌

Be on the lookout for future workshop dates and reach out if you’ve got an expertise you’d like to share.

🚨🛠️ Summer Intern Spotlight 🛠️🚨

With the fall semester in full swing, we want to take a minute to share our gratitude for our intern and Tooligan @ja3onxjiang who's energy and entrepreneurial spirit has helped us tackle a number of projects around the shop and reminded us of the power of the sharing economy to reshape our world. ♻️🌎

Here's a little more about Jason:

"I got involved through the WNY Prosperity Fellowship, where on our trip meeting all the organizations doing incredible work in the region, the Tool Library was on the agenda. I am so happy I stopped and found my way into an internship at the Tool Library.

The tool library spoke to my inner maker’s highs and lows.

As a child, one of my favorite hobbies was to vulture over leftover building scraps from my dad’s workshop. The wins I felt when I got to save pieces from the trash to make treasure are some of the best moments from my childhood.

At the same time, there were so many moments where things didn't work out. When the angle grinder, has no more disk. When every cut has to be done with a jigsaw. It was always the lack of tools I had.

With the tool library, I get to help the next generation of makers be empowered with the right tools for the job."

Likes: I love rollerblading and 3d printing. Recently I have been loving using 3D printing to repair and improve my rollerblades.

Favorite tool: My favorite Tool has to be the EGO lawn mower. I never had to mow the lawn when I lived in NYC, nor do have to dorming in Buffalo. But if I had to mow the lawn, the EGO lawn mower, with its rocket ship of assisted pushing, would be my go-to option. I just hope that I can keep up, less the mower ends up pulling me.

Favorite memory: My favorite moment this summer was spending a whole day cleaning during the summer. It has been a busy summer, but that moment of calm and enjoyment of the mundane, made everything else so much more exciting!

Favorite quote: “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” — Steve Jobs

Stop in to the shop sometime and say hi! 👋
