Something Fun to “Something Serious”

When I first heard @brunomars new album, I automatically fell in love with the amount of Latino influence in it. My body felt like moving. A workshop inspired an idea and I hit up some friends to put this together in 2 hours.

In an era where Latinos are seen in a negative light by the current admin, showcasing the beauty of latino culture in music and the arts means so much. It is also a goal of mine to bridge the dance communities in Chicago, so showcasing chicago dancers who haven’t worked with one another is amazing to see.

The Song “Oye Como Va” by Tito Puente who is Puerto Rican, Covered and made more famous by Carlos Santana who is Mexican, In the style of chachachá. In the era where Boogaloo peaked which had funk, R&B, and soul influences like James Brown. Sampled by Bruno Mars who is Filipino and D’Mile who is Haitian.
A true melting pot in music.

This mural in Pilsen, created by Brenda Lopez and Manuel Macias (@___kozmo___ @__matr__ ) tells the story of The Legend of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. Two forbidden lovers who had a tragic end. Their love was so strong that after death, the Aztec gods turned them into volcanoes, eternalizing their love forever. “Something Serious” follows the theme of love and romance.

To the dancers, Thank you so much for agreeing to do this. You’re all extremely talented and more importantly, genuine people. I am a fan of all of you. I am humbled you agreed to be part of this project. Learning choreo & formations in 2 hours is a testament to your talent. I had so much fun doing this. From people coming up to us to talk, to our very own weather man Dom 😂.

Mabbo, tysm for having the time to film this. It was so much fun having you there and bouncing off ideas. Im glad you had as much fun behind the camera as we did. It reminded me of when OLAS 🙌🏽 did a Chance The Rapper Choreo at a dance festival & you automatically started dancing too. Something you never do when filming 😂
