In 5 days, I graduate from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Architecture.

It took 5 years to get here, and when I finished my last final I walked out feeling relieved yet uneasy. As I climbed the stairs and looked around campus, I reflected on the things I hadn’t done. I thought about the late nights that turned into early mornings in Atkinson, my classmates and I trying to perfect the images we had swirling around in our minds. I remembered moving into my freshman dorm and unknowingly making friends for life. I remembered the tailgates, the kickbacks, the dining halls, the jokes, the skipped classes, the road trips, the the next-morning recaps. And yet I felt I had more to do.

Then I remembered the future. I remembered the life I’ll be able to build for myself and my family as I grow in my profession and passion. I remembered the goals I set and attained. I remembered why I hated mediocrity and why I strive to be excellent in all that I do.

With this degree, I vow to become the best architect I can be and create beauty in the world wherever I can. I vow to remain a scholar, to travel and to learn until I can’t see, and at that point I’ll learn braille.

To my brothers, my BROOOOOS: thank you for every memory we’ve shared. This fraternity altered the course of my life. I entered LSU with no brothers but I’m leaving with a battalion of them behind me. To my neophytes, I know you’ll continue to bring greatness to the greatest chapter in the world. To my prophytes, thank you for seeing in me what I had always seen in myself.
To Blackout Protocol—the restorers of the light and the harbingers of doom. When we met, I saw the potential for all of us to, in our own ways, be transcendent, and I wish the rest of the world luck in keeping up.

To my mom: none of this would be possible without you. Words cannot express how thankful I am that God chose me for you. For the rest of my life, I’ll make it my mission to make you proud. Happy Mother’s Day Ma 🫶🏾

As I look to the future trials, I’ve realized I’m not nervous in the slightest. I prepared as best I can for the exam, now all there is left is to ace it.
