Five rules

You can tell a kid to be a leader all day. That does not mean anyone will follow them.

After @adam_perdue22 sophomore year, teams started collapsing when he got to the paint. He had the three. He could get to the basket. We talked about adding the pull-up so when the defense came, he could stop and make them pay from the mid-range.

I saw him a few times that summer.
“Coach, my pull-up is getting good. My mid-range looks great.”

And it was.
Because he went and did the work.
That is the growth process people do not always see. They see the finished version. They do not see the work through injuries, the time it takes to earn the respect of a group, or the moments when you are learning how to lead before everybody is ready to follow.

Adam kept showing up for himself. He took care of his body. He listened. He gave other people room to have a voice when that was what the team needed. He never tore anybody down. Even when he could not be on the floor, he found a way to lift his teammates up.

That is leadership to me.

It is not a title. It is not points. It is not who talks the most.

It is the trust your actions earn, day in and day out.

Adam, you have already done hard things. Swarthmore will bring new ones. Do not forget what you have already proven to yourself.

Keep working. Do not stop.

Who is the leader on your team that never shows up in the box score? #inspireandmotivate
