1 WEEK TO GO — @people.to.paint NYC LAUNCH at @tashca.nyc SUNDAY/ MAY 3

Over the past year, I’ve been building People to Paint.

When I moved to New York for my residency at @timessquarespace , my practice shifted.
I moved from traditional observational painting into public art - working with magnets, creating installations, thinking beyond the canvas.

New York makes you think bigger.
And through that, I wanted to connect with the city in a deeper way.

Walking the streets, looking for people to paint - I met James, a belt maker in the East Village who has been crafting belts for over 30 years.

When I saw his belts, I saw a canvas.

His belts became the starting point for People to Paint - a way to turn everyday observation into something physical, something wearable, something that gives back and generates funds for bigger projects - from public art, exhibitions to documentary film and philanthropic initiatives.

James taught me how to make belts on the streets of New York. His story is the foundation of this project. From his knowledge I started to create the belts in my studio - each hand dyed and hand screen printed.

This collection represents NYC - from colour to design with every figure on the belt taken from my ny street photography.

Giving back to the city that has inspired me 10 % of every belt is donated to @bowerymission

From concept to creation I have worked with incredible people along the way that have helped tell and create People to Paint.

So excited to share! This is just the beginning @dariussrubin and I have been working on a Documentary about James set to be screened at the end of the year.

Special thanks to @moja.wtf for his incredible photography !
