Goodbye Summer. So many faces. So many memories. Too many to share. sea salt in my hair. Lambrusco in my stomach.
sand in my shoes. sweat on the dance floor. playbills on the wall.
midnight conversations. morning-after laughter. a few beautiful accidents. and the strange feeling that it all happened at once.

In The Valley
Dir. Adam Van Dyke
Screened as part of my remote press coverage for Soho Horror Pride Film Festival

In The Valley represents everything I love about the horror genre; challenging themes routed deep in the human experience, an abundance of gloriously horrific moments, rich colour palettes and a narrative that sends its audience on a rollercoaster of emotions. Filmmaker Adam Van Dyke has produced one of the best genre shorts I’ve seen in recent memory. This is more than a queer coded horror; it’s artful, deeply personal and truly terrifying.

Their eye for visual storytelling is clear from the outset with defined worldbuilding and characters who are so well fleshed out, it’s hard not to be engulfed in their arcs. Then there’s the colour palette which is rich in tone and wrought in emotion in its own right; acting as a third lead echoing the sentiment of the so effortlessly. The hews of purple and green lend a wonderfully cosmic tone to the proceedings which I personally adore and feels like it could be a part of any Lovecraftian feature.

The visuals are only part of the intoxication; there’s raw passion and emotion amplified by an electric performance from Jorgie Goico as Josh. Their journey from elation to devastation is heartbreaking and riveting in equal measure. Whilst the opening acts carry more dialogue, the story is reliant on visual presence. We explore the quiet space between what is said and what is felt, which heightens the experience as a viewer and makes their performance more powerful.

There’s so much depth to In The Valley and with a runtime of just 27 minutes, we’re left with more meaning and secrets to unravel after the credits roll. This is more than a film, it’s an experience and one that needs to be revisited, even as an attempt to piece together the many intricate threads woven through the tale.

I can't recommend this enough and urge you to keep a watchful eye on Adam Van Dyke, as this is only the beginning of a long, successful catalogue of genre titles in their portfolio.

Thank you to Adam Van Dyke and Soho Horror Fest for allowing me to review.

JUST confirmed by @indiexfest I am the FIRST Puerto Rican to win their award for Best Actor of the Year - as well as the first actor to do so playing a QUEER character. During Pride, girl.

I don’t know about you, but I’m from a tinny town inside a tinny island - this would have sounded like a made up story to the crew I grew up with. To them, this would be a fantastical story that’s not quite realistic. Una locuraaaa

I’ve been asked by many to post my accepting of the award, and even though I wasn’t going to because of the length and how vulnerable I feel - fuck it

I hope watching this video teaches you something new about me. And that it shows you how passionate I feel about performing. Acting is the funnest!

Thank you to the beautiful lady that said ‘You deserve it’ I heard ya. And of course thank you for recording the closer takes of this video. That nose-blowing sound was cute 😙
