Dear @jack_tame,
Congratulations on the birth of your niece.
I’m assuming that when you wrote your piece for the @nzherald, it was one of those off-the-cuff filler pieces that you probably whipped out in 30mins over your flat white.
I just wanted to take a moment to talk to you about this hypocrisy you speak of.
You mentioned mycoplasma bovis funding. Indeed, a lot of money has been spent on M.Bovis. Farmers were not consulted on the plans for m.bovis, and many saw their whole herds, their life work, eradicated with only meat-value compensation. Had they been consulted on, potentially millions of dollars would have been saved, many animals saved, and, sadly, perhaps some farmer’s lives saved too.
I can’t speak to the drought relief, nor the irrigation support, because neither of those apply to us, but I can tell you that in the recent floods, we have not received a penny of the government’s money. And our neighbours, who had massive devastation, got $3500. (As an idea of futility, a digger costs about $1500/day to hire, and weeks of repair were needed).
The COVID-19 wage support was good, it enabled us to carry on working, despite the fact that our main income had been halved (deer farmers), but it wasn’t industry specific, so Im not sure how this fits here.
We have not been consulted on the freshwater bill, which will cost us, personally, thousands. Emissions reductions and Ute taxes will also cost us thousands, and we have not been consulted. We also have environmental regional legislation to comply to, and all the while, as we fence, plant and comply as best we can out of our farm budgets, we are accused of ruining the environment, climate, and abusing animals.
Even vegans need to eat farmers produce- not everyone grows veges in their backyard. Even beer comes from wheat farmers produce, and vineyards are farmers too.
