One more stop before heading home! We had a quick layover in Frankfurt again so at 7am we took a stroll around the cute little town of Dreieich, home of Burg Hayn, a castle dating back to the 9th century and checked out a modern art installation called Bar Pyramid. 4.10

We did it! 7 days of exploring Morocco, over 1200 miles of driving and a whole lot of memories made with these two awesome ladies! My take away? There are so many beautiful places in Morocco but we are hands down so blessed to live where we live and have the freedoms and opportunities that we may sometimes take for granted. It’s always good to be reminded of that.

On our way to the airport we stopped in the oceanside city of Rabat for dinner. Very modern compared to other cities with shopping malls and multi-lane roads. It was so strange to arrive with the streets completely empty but it was iftar, the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. Once we came out from dinner the city was bustling with traffic and foot traffic. Wish we could have seen the ocean during the day.

The Blue City! Chefchaouen, is an old city but it wasn't until the the 1900s that it was painted blue. During that time Morocco saw a large influx of Jews as the Second World War started. For the Jews, the color blue represents the sky, which reminded people of heaven and God. It’s a beautiful little city to walk and the perfect place to spend our last day here in Morocco.

No, we didn't go to Italy! Built by Romans in the 1st century AD, Volubilis is one of the largest and most important archaeological sites in Morocco. A once-great settlement spanning over 40-hectares it was home to over 20,000 people. It was filled with great houses and villas adorned with intricate mosaics. There was a forum, a triumphal arch, temples, and public baths. Only half of the ruins have been excavated. What remains at the site today is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What an experience walking through this piece of history!

Stunning green vistas on our drive from Fez to the sacred city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Considered to be the most sacred city in Morroco, it is one of the country's most important pilgrimage sites. Some Moroccans say that poor believers can make the annual pilgrimage here instead of Mecca. The city's holy status kept it closed to non-Muslims until 1912, and it wasn't until 2005 that non-Muslims were allowed to stay overnight in the town. We merely had time to check out the view.

The Madrasa al-Attarine was built as a center of religious learning in the 14th century and is considered one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture. The courtyard is richly decorated with intricately hand-carved stucco and wood arches and adorned with mosaic tile and Arabic calligraphy. It is a calm oasis in the heart of the bustling market outside.

Fez was one of my favorite cities to visit. It stands out because of numerous narrow maze like alleys and the eclectic array of beautiful shops including pottery, intricate metal work, shoes and leather goods. The streets were also very clean. Fez is listed as a World Heritage Site and is believed to be one of the world's largest urban pedestrian zones (car-free areas). It is also considered the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco. Spent the evening doing a little shopping before dinner.

DAY 6 On the road again! This time 289 miles/7 hour drive from Merzouga north to the city of Fez. We had expected a rather drab drive but Morocco surprised us with the varied terrain.

Dragged ourselves out of our warm beds and climbed a dune to see the sunrise then headed out in a 4x4 through the dunes.
