My name is Jackie. I am 26 and am living in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I had a great childhood. I loved sports and my parents were involved and always supported me. I tried my first painkiller in 2013 when I was 17 after getting my wisdom teeth out. I remember being scared. When on painkillers, I felt confident, like I was fun to be around, It took away my anxiety but I wasn’t addicted yet.

I went off to college and steered clear of them until 2017. I broke off great friendships and relationships for reasons that didn’t make sense. I think I could see myself becoming more toxic and wanted to save those people from the hurt I was bringing on.

I tried to get sober on my own many times. I had a doctor confused when I poured my heart out begging for help. He sent me on my way with anxiety meds. At that point I thought I’d always be that way until I died. That I was going to use until I died. I was functioning, no one in my life knew what was going on.

In December of 2019 I met someone who was sober and was the only person I knew that had gone through what I was going through. She told me about the clinic that helped her get sober.

New Years of 2020, I was out with my friends looking around at the world around me, remembering what life was like without using to get through the day.

The day after this I called the clinic she referred me to and I immediately got on suboxone. I have been sober from painkillers since.

I met my person through sobriety. He has been sober from Heroin for 8 years. We have a son that is now 18 months old. I graduate with my bachelors in business this December.

I think about what might have happened if I got sober sooner, but I can’t dwell in “what if’s.” My goal is to help people who are struggling find resources to help them get their life back. @jackie.lowee
