Lazy Sunday vibes, Du Bois style 🤍

A bedroom made for slow mornings and staying a little longer beneath the covers. Soft, layered linens, warm timber overhead and pale oak underfoot create a calm, natural retreat, while expansive glazing draws the rolling Te Arai landscape and distant sea right into the room.

Part of The Next Chapter — @sbidawards international finalist project - a home designed to feel connected to its beautiful setting, and wonderfully easy to unwind in.

Pāpāmoa Beach House by Herbst Architects is a project I still love looking back on. Completed a few years ago, it features a bespoke Pivot Coffee Table, Tokyo Chairs by Bensen, and our Duffel Ottoman.

13 metres with one seamless design story.

Thirteen metres of wire-brushed oak cabinetry runs continuously from the living room, through the kitchen and into the scullery.

The aim was to work seamlessly with the architecture — creating one uninterrupted design language rather than treating the kitchen as a separate space. The cabinetry connects each zone with a sense of calm and continuity, allowing the materiality, scale and architecture of the home to take centre stage.

A kitchen designed not just as a room, but as part of the architecture.

Utility Shed, designed by Herbst Architects, is a small ancillary building on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. Rather than treating the shed as a reduced version of a house, the project works directly with the requirements of storage, shelter, and exposure, allowing construction to determine its architectural character.

A lightweight timber frame establishes the basic enclosure, with timber screens and operable elements controlling how open or protected the interior becomes. The repeated framing remains visible, making structure, cladding, and ventilation easy to read. Deep roof edges protect the timber from the island’s wet coastal conditions while creating sheltered working space around the perimeter.

The project is modest in program but precise in assembly. Standard timber members, exposed joints, and adjustable enclosure turn a utilitarian outbuilding into an exercise in how little material is required to make a durable, adaptable shelter.

A kitchen designed around the art of living 🖤

Our Negresco Quartzite brings depth and drama to this stunning Parnell apartment by @du_bois_design its deep charcoal tones and striking white veining contrasting beautifully with warm timber cabinetry and aged metal finishes.

Designed around a love of cooking, entertaining and beautiful materials, every detail balances form, function and natural luxury.

In a Du Bois Design project at Te Arai, our Odessa rug in Zinc anchors the room without asking for attention. Hand-knotted from soft Afghan wool, it holds a subtle shift of tone across its surface. Cool, tactile, and completely at home by the coast.

Some very exciting news, my No Stone Unturned kitchen in Te Arai has been named the 2026 SBID Regional Award Winner for Oceania for Kitchen Design. 🏆

To have this project recognised on an international stage by the SBID International Design Awards is incredibly special.

The Regional Award is presented to the highest-scoring project from the international judging panel within each region, with entries assessed for technical content, aesthetic creativity, functionality and fit-for-purpose design. I’m so grateful to the judges for recognising the thought, detail and craftsmanship behind this project.

No Stone Unturned was designed as the heart of my clients’ retirement home, set high in the hills with uninterrupted views across the Pacific Ocean.

At its centre is a sculptural, faceted quartzite island, its angular planes creating an ever-changing interplay of light, shadow and form. The extraordinary natural stone brings together sea-green and earthy brown tones, echoing the colours of the land and ocean beyond. Against this, the warmth and grain of the timber cabinetry brings softness and balance, while natural light from the skylight above highlights the richness and texture of the materials.

More than anything, this kitchen was designed around family — a place for children and grandchildren to gather, cook, eat and spend time together, balancing substantial functionality with a calm and highly resolved interior.

I’m incredibly proud to see a New Zealand-designed kitchen recognised amongst outstanding work from around the world.

Thank you to my wonderful clients for trusting me with their home, and to the talented craftspeople and suppliers who helped bring the design to life.

Set quietly on the Coromandel coast, Hut on Sleds is a holiday home that turns a planning constraint into something extraordinary.

Designed by Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects in 2011, the 40m² retreat sits within a coastal erosion zone where buildings must be removable. The answer was wonderfully literal, the entire hut rests on two substantial timber sleds, allowing it to be moved inland, across the beach, or even onto a barge.

When closed, rough macrocarpa cladding gives the hut a simple, almost sculptural presence. Open it up, and a two-storey shutter lifts to become an awning, revealing steel-framed glazing and a double-height living space that opens directly towards the coast.

Inside, every square metre is considered. Built-in storage, a three-tier bunk, two sleeping zones and a compact kitchen, dining and living space make the small footprint work effortlessly.

There’s something particularly beautiful about the way the hut responds to its environment rather than trying to overcome it. Rainwater collection, separate potable and grey-water tanks and a worm-tank waste system allow it to operate with minimal infrastructure on the sensitive dune site.

Small in footprint, bold in thinking.

A house designed not just to sit on the coast, but to move with it.

🏠 A Hut on a Sled!
Designed by Crosson Architects, this 40 m² (430 ft²) holiday retreat can literally be towed off the beach to safety. When not in use, it seals up tight against the elements. Inside, it fits a kitchen, dining, living space, bathroom, and two cozy sleeping zones — enough for a family of five.

Who said a stairwell has to be serious?

Our little cluster of floating ‘jellyfish’ lights by Bocci brings an unexpected sense of play to the Te Arai stairwell.

Each glass colour was carefully selected to create the right balance as the pendants float at different heights against the landscape beyond.

What I love about these lights is that they’re fun without taking away from the sophistication of the interior. There should always be room for a little playfulness in design.
