MIXED FEELINGS is out today! 🌦️ Some of you know this book took me my whole life to write & there have been times when it felt like the world didn't want it or wasn't ready for it. This makes its launch even more meaningful to me & I have a lifetime of people to thank. (see acknowledgments for full list) First & foremost, my sister @imageigloo whose gorgeous artwork lights up the cover & with whom I first embarked on this project. My mother (@slabtownsue) & father who taught me a love of reading & language, who taught me so much just by being themselves. All my teachers, mentors & friends. Thanks to @freemantides, @micahperks, @saraswat_s, @bethalvarado79, @emilyforland & Karen Tei Yamashita for reading & thinking with me. Thanks to @cheemobile, @tinachang, @kylelucia, @heartichoke, @bliss_broyard & @monicaferrell for their generous comments, I'm so grateful! Thanks to @lillykuwashima for your example. Thanks to @jv_lyon_words, for all of the above. Thank you, @jacklegpress, for making the book a book! ✨🌈✨ City of Angels, see you tomorrow night at @skylightbooks!🎂🥂

I’m so excited and grateful to reveal the fabulous cover of my forthcoming short story collection, Three States of Rice, which @jacklegpress will release into the world in February!

This is my 10th book and first short story collection—it’s filled with both recent stories and ones written almost 30 years ago, and offers a window into my weird brain and heart.

I’ll be sharing the generous blurbs I’ve received from writers I admire between now and the book’s release, and want to start with one from the amazing Juan Martinez, who acquired the book for @jacklegpress and has ushered it forward with so much care. Someday I’ll share the origin story of how this book came about because of my bookstore @secretworldbooks (btw, I’ve added a @bookshop_org preorder link in bio that will benefit our store!) For now, please enjoy these beautiful words from Juan (who is an amazing writer as well as a kickass editor—check out Extended Stay and his other work!)

“Some of the strangest, funniest, most horrifying situations wait for you in these stories, as well as some of the sweetest, most intriguing, most disquietingly familiar characters: there is, for starters, a cavalcade of odd, funny mothers. And there are some heroic and supportive mothers. Plus some hurricanes. Plus: strange babysitters, supportive siblings, actual professional navel-gazers, all in service of fictional worlds fully attuned to our own world. We’re in generous territory here, with family and humor and darkness at its core. What Brandeis does here is a bit of a miracle: every story shines, every story reminds us of how odd it is to be alive, and how deeply interconnected we all are, and how family and strangers alike are worthy of our attention—in every state and at every stage.”

Thank you, Juan, JackLeg, and everyone who has shown so much support and love! 🥰

As summer cools off, Mind the Bird Media has 5 forthcoming titles publishing in the Fall season! Stay tuned to this page for more information. Critics, reviewers, and editors, get in touch (link in bio) for review copies.

GHOST SMOKE by H.L. Hix and Jonathan Weinert (Poems, Bridwell Press - July 14)

Fabricated of material collected from over two decades of correspondence and collaboration, Ghost Smoke borrows the structure of a crown of sonnets, completing a circuit that seeks to defeat the standard distinctions between question and answer, presence and absence, self and other.

WHAT CAME DOWN IN THE SMOKE by Summer J. Hart (Poems, Jackleg Press - August 17)

Suffused with the horror, humor, and magic of Wabanaki storytelling, What Came Down in the Smoke is, like a child left for dead in the snow who comes home with a beaver’s tail, a story about survival.

UNBELONGING: A LIFE IN SEARCH OF HOME by Catherine Jagoe (Memoir, University of Wisconsin Press - August 18)

While partly an immigrant narrative, Jagoe’s memoir in essays is not so much—or not only—about moving to the US and putting down roots but rather more about feeling perpetually in-between and never quite “home.” Throughout, Jagoe wrestles with what identity and fidelity mean for a woman with three nationalities, a job as a translator who frequently lives in a fourth country, a history of depression, and chronically divided allegiances.

THE VANISHINGS by Kavi Yaga (Fiction, Texas Review Press - August 18)

Eight jeweled hauntings: the disappeared and disappearing, the once-longed-for, the self, the empty door . . . each story immerses you in an intimate, propulsive life that will lodge in your bones. Devastatingly comedic and heartbreaking, together, this collection offers an expansive portrait of South Indian life in today’s 21st-century, global world.

COCKLEBUR: NEW & SELECTED POEMS (Copper Canyon Press - October 6)

Erin Belieu’s Cocklebur: New & Selected Poems gathers three decades of work alongside a generous selection of new poems. Wide-ranging in style and subject, this collection confronts with unsentimental clarity both tender intimacies and grief, as well as the absurdities o
