I’m not entirely sure how to put into words what I’m feeling as we head into the final performance of Moby Dick: a Sea Shanty.

This show only exists because I got turned down for so many other shows and thought - eh, I’ll do this instead! I stumbled into sea shanties (thx to my daughter, Sophia) thinking it might be a fun experiment and had no real sense of what it could become. And somewhere along the way, it turned into something far more meaningful and alive than I ever anticipated.

What I do know is how grateful I am.

To Fritz and Elaine, who have been in this with me for months, shaping it, challenging it, and building it piece by piece. To Daniella, Shelbi, Gianna, Jack, Emily, and every single member of this cast, crew, and band who took something raw and made it breathe. You made it better than I knew how to make it. To the entire team at @mththeater for what they do everyday. And of course Bella (who saw it 5 times) and @jeskincaid who makes magic out of everything.

This is the kind of theater I love. Immediate, musical, and made right in front of you everyday. I’m deeply grateful it turned out the way it did and with the people it did.

And so happy closing MOBY DICK: a Sea Shanty. You’ve come a long way since all the iPhone notes and scribbling as I re-read the novel and then listened to the 25 hour audio book. That’s right, 25 hours 🌀

Cheers, mates! 🐳

…you will make all kinds of mistakes; but as long as you are generous and true, and also fierce, you cannot hurt the world. she was made to be wooed and won by youth.

grab a snack, friends. this is a long one. today, we closed ken ludwig’s dear jack dear louise at peninsula players, and my heart is so full of all the feelings that it just might burst.

this whole summer has been a balm, a gift, a dream. but this show…well. maybe someday i’ll have the words, but for now all i can say is thank you.

thank you to @lindapfortunato and @meteoracres and @peninsulaplayers for the narnia on earth that you’ve nurtured. i’m not ready to go back through the wardrobe.

thank you to @scootydubs, pal for nearly two decades and director extraordinaire. i’ve always been a fan of you, my friend, but being in your orbit as you led the room with kindness, humor, generosity, intention, intelligence, and CARE has me floored. so thankful for you, sir.

thank you to our murderers row of a design team, @jackmagaw, @leefiskness, @georgia_theatreartist, @joshuaschmidt42ftforward , and our assassin SM team kaitlin and duncan, and our cavalcade of brilliant interns. you are EVERYTHING.

and to partner-in-crime @lukenowakowski…thank you forever. it’s been an honor writing you letters for 90 minutes a night. you and your giant generous heart are easy to fall for. love, louise.

PS. if you saw me crying on the treadmill at the Y this morning, no you didn’t.

We don't typically do #flashbackfriday, but we had to show off the incredible detail that went into building the EAST TEXAS HOT LINKS set before the show closes on Sunday. Scroll through for the realest fake trees we've ever seen 👀

Thanks to Scenic Artist Sarah Lewis, Scenic Artist Michael Besancon, Props Manager Lara Musard, Scenic Designer Jack Magaw, and countless others, we were able to bring East Texas all the way to Chicago. A Texas-sized thank you to this incredible team!

Welcome to Salem, witches. Becky Nurse will be your tour guide. 🍩✨

Our 34th season starts with the Midwest premiere of Becky Nurse of Salem by Sarah Ruhl, directed by Polly Noonan.

Becky Nurse, an outspoken, quick-witted tour guide at the Salem Museum of Witchcraft, strains to navigate life in post-Obama America. As a descendant of Rebecca Nurse, who was executed for witchcraft in 1692, she questions whether things have truly changed for women. As her struggles grow, Becky turns to a local witch for help. One spell leads to another, spiraling her life into chaos. This darkly comic play delves into a woman grappling with her family’s past and finding her voice in the “lock her up” era.

Previews start October 4th at Theater Wit, just in time for spooky season!

Tickets on sale now 🍩

“I think it is fear that I am feeling. At least, I think it's fear — the speed, the noise. Breathing and thundering, with this boy that was terrified and hiding one moment and fearless and flying with me the next. Fearless and flying with me, body to body beside him.”
