April’s best bites in Los Angeles and beyond, from a Japan-inspired bento in Little Tokyo to a French classic in Santa Barbara. This month brought old favorites, spontaneous discoveries, and a wine pairing that proved omakase and wine belong together. Here are my best bites of April:

Japanese A5 Kobe Crispy Taquito from @sushisamba.la This brought me straight back to my NYU days dining at the West Village location. The menu is different, the setting is different, but revisiting Sushi Samba after all this time was such a fun throwback.

Koshihikari Rice Porridge from @destroyer.la
I’ve loved this dish since they opened. Roasted leeks, caramelized broccoli, puffed rice, and black garlic. Savory, comforting, and a great daytime meal.

Toro Tartare from @morihirosunset paired with @xandersorenwines Pinot Noir
An evening celebrating new wine releases alongside Chef Mori’s menu made the case better than any description could. Xander Soren’s wines are designed specifically for Japanese cuisine, and tasting it here proved exactly why that pairing works.

Sweet Corn Tortellini from @baldibeverlyhills
A spontaneous dinner at the Waldorf with @jacksfoodla had me genuinely impressed by the transformation of this restaurant. The sweet corn tortellini with mascarpone and truffle butter was the dish I couldn’t stop thinking about.

Miso Black Cod Bento from @azay_littletokyo
Still missing Japan, and Azay in Little Tokyo is the best cure. After working through the menu over several visits, I’ve landed on the miso black cod as my favorite bento protein choice. This place is such a special gem.

Duck Breast & Maple Glazed Confit from @bouchonsantabarbara
An escape to Santa Barbara, classic French technique, wine country setting. The confit with port thyme demi-glace was the standout.

A beautiful evening celebrating a spectacular human being- Dr Arlene Drake (@drarlenedrake), who not only saved my life but has transformed the lives of thousands across the country. She’s done it all with love, compassion, kindness—and yes, plenty of F-bombs. 💕
This night was so well deserved, honoring the immeasurable impact she’s had on so many. Love you, Arlene!
A special thanks to @thesourcelgbt , @brianpoth @lianareid , @camillegarmendia , and @msmofish for making it all happen. Delicious food by super star @jacksfoodla, incredible lighting by @sprocketslighting . #drarlenedrake #carefrontation
