The Prickly Shark (Echinorhinus Cookei). What an incredible animal to experience, such raw power and strength. Still can’t believe I got to work with another one in person, these sharks are incredibly unique and are classified as data deficient due to the limited human interaction/lack of species information. I am very blessed to be able to record my own observations and continue pursuing satellite tagging for this species through @grayfishtag. The more we educate ourselves, the more species-specific data we are able to collect and use to better understand, manage, and sustainably utilize our coastline.
Estimated length: 9FT

The prickly shark dwells in the abyss: deep water, large submarine canyons. This shark can produce sizable litters, with a documented female individual noted as carrying 114 live pups in a single litter. Such a rare and unique sight, I feel honored to be one of the few to ever experience a prickly firsthand. A non-delay, safe release is ALWAYS top priority, especially for these larger, unpredictable, more robust species. Conditions proved tough, but our night ended with a great release and smiles on our faces.

My favorite shark is back! Another summertime prickly shark, genuinely such a tank of a shark and an awesome animal to interact with. Great conditions, warm water, super easy release. Wrangled with @jacksonadamssss. These sharks are so alien like, super stoked to be gathering data on these animals and helping better understand the species. Prickly pear for the win #Dub #KingPearl
