Three years ago I got the call asking me to help lead this grassroots campaign to increase the minimum wage for the first time since 2009. I’m so glad I said yes. I’m also not the same person who answered that phone call three years ago, and I think that’s a good thing.

My life has gotten comfortable. I don’t live paycheck to paycheck anymore. When Josie had a medical emergency in the middle of this campaign, it didn’t bankrupt me, although the hospital bill nearly gave me a heart attack.

I didn’t hear a lot of stories like mine over the course of this campaign. The story I heard, over and over, is that people are hurting. And what they need is more money in their pockets. It really is that simple.

The people of Oklahoma gave me an education these last three years that will shape how I show up as an advocate for the rest of my life. Their stories made me respect the labor of every Oklahoman in a way that made me realize how much of other people’s labor I had taken for granted before.

What we do for work is so much of who we are, and that’s just as true for a home health aide making $12 an hour doing backbreaking work caring for our most vulnerable as it is for the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

Everyone deserves the dignity of a decent paycheck.

I hope the folks who haven’t been shown much dignity before felt like this campaign gave them a voice. That it let them be seen. Really, really seen.

Tomorrow, nothing in my life changes. Win or lose, I go on living a comfortable life with the security of a decent paycheck. But for the Oklahomans whose paychecks would grow by about $4,200 a year, the stakes are so much higher.

Today as I pace around and overthink every critical decision over the course of the last three years, I’ll be thinking about my fellow Oklahomans who could use that boost. But more than that, I’ll be thinking about how they’ll feel if we get to deliver this win for them.

Say yes, Oklahoma. Polls are open!
