Gordo 2014-2026💔
Happiest dog ever and so so loved. Laser like focus on food and treats at all times and here’s hoping there is an abundance of chocolate waiting to be sniffed out.
Thanks to the wonderful @drkateadams Maria and Zoe and everyone at @bondivethospital for their care and kindness and never ending treats. It was always one of Gordo’s favorite place to visit.
He brought us only joy ❤️‍🩹

Despite the Night: Short Film (2026)

There’s something so strange about seeing an apocalyptic Australia on screen. We’ve had some post-apocalyptic Australian films, but rarely the type of large-scale disaster story that Despite the Night is playing with here. And while it’s only a short film, it packs quite a lot into its 13-minute runtime.

Set in the aftermath of a devastating volcanic eruption, the film follows two brothers who essentially only have each other as they try to survive in what’s left of Australia. Ash clouds have blocked out the sky, meaning their world is almost constantly dark and the film does such a good job of using colour and light to establish just how bleak this new reality has become. There’s an eeriness to seeing familiar Australian surroundings transformed into something that feels completely different.

The world-building is surprisingly effective for such a short runtime too. Rather than spending precious minutes explaining exactly what happened, radio announcements and little pieces of passing conversation give us enough information to understand what everyday life has become. It’s smart exposition because it never really feels like the film has stopped to explain itself.

But underneath the disaster setting there’s actually something quite delicate about Despite the Night. The brothers are also caring for their ill grandmother, which immediately brings a more human element to this massive event happening around them. Survival isn’t just about looking after themselves. They’re still trying to care for someone they love when simply getting through another day is already difficult enough.

The performances from the two boys are particularly good during the quieter moments. There’s clearly a closeness between them because of everything they’ve been through together, but there’s also this slight emotional distance. They don’t need to constantly tell each other how they’re feeling for you to understand the bond that’s there.

And that’s ultimately what makes the ending hit. After spending such a short amount of time with these, it manages to become surprisingly sad.
