“It is the ampersand,” Adam Gopnik writes in the introductory essay to our September 180th Anniversary issue, “whose curling form connects, among many other things, the double name of this magazine, that exists to join opposites, urban with rural, town with country. It creates a relationship that looks less like a forced union than a fond alliance.” To celebrate almost two centuries of our own history as an American duo joined by ampersand, we invited four other American duos we love to celebrate. They star on this special cover, joined by four specially commissioned ampersands created for our 180th birthday by artists we love. And so T&C and @marthastewart48 & @karltowns, and T&C and Taylor Sheridan & The Wild West, and T&C and @corneliaguest & @ivygetty , and T&C & @annasui & @chasesuiwonders. Joined in ampersands made especially for the occasion by @konstantinkakanias @honortitus @barryblitt and @toledox2. It’s a party inside and we can wait for you to see who else turned up. Say it with us now: 180. 180? 180! “What the ampersand hath joined together, let no man put asunder” Happy Birthday T&C, you duo I love. @townandcountrymag #tandc180

On January 7, 2025 I called my mom because I heard there was a fire near our family home in Pacific Palisades. Truthfully, not the most uncommon occurrence— fires in the Palisades and Malibu had become somewhat commonplace and were usually extinguished fairly quickly. She let me know they were keeping an eye on it, everyone was safe and she was sure it would be out soon.

A few hours later, we chatted and she said that she was evacuating and was hoping to be home the next day.

The next day— everything was gone. Not just our home but over 6,000 homes and 23,000 acres.

Included in the disaster was my very favorite store, @elysewalker ✨ We’d been shopping at Elyse Walker since I was in middle school and they had one store in the Palisades. Over the years, we watched as Elyse expanded her footprint down the block and across the country.

Every time I came home to visit, “Let’s have lunch at Cafe Vida and go to Elyse Walker?” was the first thing out of my mouth. I remember buying my prom dress there when I was 16.

Tomorrow, August 15, we celebrate the grand re-opening of @elysewalker at their new location in the @palisadesvillage ✨

My roots will forever be in Pacific Palisades. We are a strong community, we are coming back stronger than ever and I’m so proud to be represented by Elyse.

Special thanks to @alexandralippin @alex_elysewalker and the entire team for all of your hard work.
