Two weeks have passed since Wolverhampton Business Week. An incredible week put together by @investwolverhampton.

Corporate talking points have settled, but for young, Black creatives in our city, the reality remains the same.

We are in UK Black History Month, a time when institutions love a performative celebration, yet we are still fighting structural barriers just to get our art in the room.

I broke down my panel discussion into five things Black artists are forced to deal with on the journey to success:

Assumed Affiliation
We’re often blocked from using venues due to baseless assumptions about the crowds we might bring. Yet, a white colleague can walk in and book the same place with absolutely no friction. We have to prove our value before we even step inside.

Tick box Exposure
Corporate loves to mask free labour as a great opportunity to hit diversity quotas. We are expected to bring our culture for free while corporate spaces profit, especially during UK Black History Month. Exposure doesn’t pay the bills. Get me a budgets, watch me rally the right people into your space.

The Access Tax
Progress rarely comes from institutions doing the right thing. It happens because someone forcefully opened a locked door. Once inside, we have the taxing job of holding the door open so the next generation can get paid.

Retrospective Support
They’re quick to offer praise after we have already executed something successfully. True civic support doesn’t wait for hindsight. We want applause at the finish line, we need active access to resources from day one.

Local Limitations
Hometown gatekeepers will treat you as just another local act, completely ignoring your national recognition until it is time to use your accolades to promote their own platforms.

I have asked for a seat at the table. Hopefully, we are on the right track to building better connections between the youth, our communities, and the civic powers. I am launching a brand new platform this November to bridge the gap between Wolverhampton independent talent and global culture.
