The Art of Sarasota

When people think of Sarasota, beautiful beaches, sunshine, and waterfront living usually come to mind. And while we love all those things, we've always felt that what makes a place truly special goes far beyond its scenery.

It's the little restaurants we return to, the familiar faces at our favorite shops, the music, the art, and the traditions that become part of our lives. After all, isn't that what makes somewhere feel like home?

Here in Sarasota, the arts have been part of our story since the days of John and Mable Ringling. Their legacy helped shape what we now proudly call Florida's Cultural Coast, a community where creativity is as much a part of everyday life as our beautiful Gulf waters.

Following the success of our Downtown Sarasota series, we're excited to introduce The Art of Sarasota, celebrating the people, places, and performances that make our city such an exceptional place to call home.

And we couldn't think of a better place to begin than the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, an institution that has helped shape Sarasota's cultural landscape for more than two decades.

I've been fortunate to call its founder and artistic director, Nate Jacobs, a friend for more than 25 years, going back to a time when the troupe performed in small theaters around town. What began as Nate's dream of creating opportunities for talented performers has grown into a beloved Sarasota institution, nurturing generations of young artists and even helping some make their way to Broadway.

It's people like Nate, and the passion they bring to our community, that remind us why we love Sarasota a little more every day.

Because a wonderful place to live isn't just about the homes, the beaches, or the beautiful views. It's about the people who give a community its heart and the things that make us feel we belong.

And Sarasota has so much of both.

With warmest regards,

Last night, we gathered in music, remembrance and community. 💙

Together, Sarasota Orchestra and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall presented Summon the Heroes, a commemorative benefit concert honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and paying tribute to the first responders, service members and everyday heroes who continue to serve our communities.

But this special evening was about more than remembering - it was about supporting the heroes in our community today. Proceeds from the concert will benefit four local charities: Resilient Retreat, Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Charitable Foundation, Sarasota Firefighters Benevolent Fund and Sarasota Police Foundation, helping support those who serve and care for our community every day.

We are deeply grateful to Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, and Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation for helping make this meaningful evening possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Van Wezel - neighbors, friends and music lovers who came together to affirm that our community is always stronger, more connected and more resilient when we stand together.

I’m honored to be joining @sarasotaorchestra this week for an evening of iconic orchestral music and patriotic classics honoring the first responders who serve our community every day. Preparing this music has expanded my heart with gratitude for our beautiful country filled with amazing human beings!

“As we approach the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we’re turning reflection into action: proceeds from ticket sales will benefit four local organizations supporting Sarasota’s firefighters, deputies, officers, paramedics and dispatchers. Join us in saying thank you through the power of music!”

Dear Tammi,

I had a whole breakdown at the beginning of this (recent) process, convinced you had left me. Truth is, I was just too distracted by life to feel your presence.

I’m grateful to my sister Kim Weston @jazzminshonta for reminding me that you’re ALWAYS with me, and to my sister Mary Wells @jadashynese for reminding me of my magic.

I believe you don’t get very far in life without sisters who keep you grounded. I’m honored to share such a remarkable man—and duet partner—with each of you.

@iamsheldonrhoden , thank you taking care of me as Marvin cared for Tammi. I love you deep. There’s truly no mountain high enough to keep me from you.

@jacobs_nate @westcoastblacktheatretroupe thank you trusting me to carry such a precious human being.

Let’s soar 🤎
