📄 It's been a year since the publication of our Navigating Menopause in the Workplace white paper.

So Women in Transport, @pa_consulting_global and @jacobsconnectsJacobs brought colleagues from across the transport sector back together to reflect on what's changed, where challenges remain and, importantly, what needs to happen next.

The roundtable discussions explored six themes:

Policy and healthcare
Flexible working
Intersectionality
Career progression
Cost and finance
Culture and behaviours

Across them, one message came through clearly - awareness of menopause in the workplace is growing, but awareness alone is not enough. The next step is turning understanding into practical, consistent support that works for people in different roles and circumstances.

Fit-out coordination problems rarely stay in one discipline. 👀

Move one duct—and suddenly ceiling levels, lighting, sprinklers, access panels, joinery, and finishes can all be affected.

In fast-track fit-out projects, there’s very little space and even less time for late coordination decisions.

That’s why BIM coordination has to happen before the ceiling closes—not just to ask “Does it clash?” but “Does the entire zone actually work?”

Better coordination protects more than the model.
It protects design intent, installation sequence, programme, and finish quality.

Make coordination decisions before they become site problems.

Pierce Point - Point Reyes National Seashore.
Excavation with so many geologists - what a damn treat.
Roaring morning ocean.
Tule Elk.
Historic dairy farms.
So many oysters - also learned how to shuck.
Late birthday getaway.
New favorite bird - the Marsh Wren (not pictured).
Beautiful hotel. Crappy mattress and TV, one channel (Nickelodeon) at one volume - LOUD.
The best field crew.
Nothin but sunshine.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻? | 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆’𝘀 𝗘𝘆𝗲𝘀

🚗 A little time stuck on the 405, but well worth the trip to Van Nuys!

Charley spent the day at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, moderating conversations with water professionals who know firsthand what it takes to get major infrastructure projects across the finish line.

What made the day valuable? Hearing the successes, the setbacks and the lessons learned from agencies tackling some of Southern California’s most ambitious water projects.

For Charley, the biggest takeaway was the willingness to have honest conversations about what needs to change. Better contracting approaches, smarter investments and fewer obstacles to getting projects done.

Because California doesn’t just need more water solutions. We need to get better at delivering them.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻?

🚗 Stuck on the 405! But when it comes to California’s water future, we can’t afford to be stuck in traffic.

This week, SCWC Executive Director Charley Wilson headed to the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys to moderate Knowledge Share Workshop #3: Lessons Learned on Progressive Design-Build.

The workshop brought together water agencies and industry experts to share real-world experiences from six major water infrastructure projects across Southern California.

The focus? Finding smarter, faster and more cost-effective ways to deliver the water projects our communities need.

From contracting strategies and cost constraints to permitting challenges and project delivery, participants explored what worked, what didn’t and what we can do differently moving forward.

The takeaway is simple: We don’t have to reinvent the wheel, but we do have to learn from one another. By sharing lessons, embracing innovative approaches and making informed decisions, we can move critical water infrastructure projects forward with greater efficiency and certainty.

A big thank you to Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, LA Sanitation & Environment and Jacobs for bringing everyone together for these important conversations!

Educate. Advocate. Collaborate. Deliver.

‘Rigorous design combined with innovative delivery’

Colne Valley Viaduct - the UK and HS2’s longest railway bridge - won another award this week, this time at the New Civil Engineer British Construction & Infrastructure Awards in the Engineering Excellence category. The viaduct is a model structure, where an ‘architectural vision is realised through outstanding engineering’.

This award recognises the value of true collaboration among the project team from concept design through to construction – HS2 Ltd, Align JV (Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick) and Align D (Rendel Limited / Ingérop, Jacobs, Grimshaw, LDA Design), alongside supply chain partners VSL, VolkerLaser, J Coffey, Kilnbridge, Tarmac, Littlewood, SOCOTEC, VolkerStevin and VolkerGroundEngineering, who all contributed to the safe and successful completion of the Colne Valley Viaduct, now the UK’s longest railway bridge.

A BIM model can be correct—and the project can still lose control of its information.

On UAE government and public-sector projects, BIM is not only about modelling.

It’s about having the right information, the right version, with the right people, at the right time.

That means clear information requirements, structured BIM execution planning, ISO 19650-aligned workflows, controlled approvals, and a well-managed Common Data Environment.

Because compliance shouldn’t be something you check at handover.

It should be built into the process from day one.
