Chaotically organized wonder is how I always imagined Tokyo would be 🇯🇵

We were here for @jacobsmedium’s photo exhibition at this year’s T3 Photo Festival, and I’m so glad we were, because I have no idea how I slept on visiting this city for so long!

In the overwhelm that is Tokyo, I actually found myself trying to plan way less out of this trip than ever before, and letting more free time and random discovery lead the way.

Neighborhood izakaya around the corner with no sign on the door, but it’s been in business 60 years? Why not.

Disneyland Tokyo is just a few stops away on the metro? Omg!

Karaoke in order to eat something from my childhood in the city that invented it (honey toast)? Hand me the mic.

Shinto procession an hour away? Let’s go.

Random question, do you find yourself planning your trips more, or less, now that AI is around? I’m curious! #OffDutyinTokyo

This is what it looks like when you drive into the heart of a country. Away from crowds and cities and any logical explanations for how something like this can exist.

It’s been a month since our lap of Australia has come to an end and to be honest I feel like I’m dropping my marbles (pun, obviously, pls laugh 🥲) on sharing what we’ve seen because there’s just no way of capturing every feeling or memory. The more I think about it, the more I simply have no idea where to even begin.

It was the best gift of time we could’ve given to ourselves. A career break road trip in our 30s. To see places like this with our own eyes!!!

What I will say is that on this particular day, we had just driven 8+ hours, racing into the outback all so we could make it here by sunset (and we hardly made it). We spent one night camping in this completely illogical and special place far from anything, where rounded granite marbles emerge from the earth. A place so strange even Aboriginal Dreamtime stories say this place was formed by the journey of a Devil Man.

Can you believe this is only week 2 of our lap? But already, this was one of my favorite camping memories from the road.

📍 Have you heard of Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) in Australia’s Northern Territory?

The most transformative 4 months of my 32nd year of life were spent right here.

Byron Bay is a divisive place, one that everyone knows and has an emotional reaction to. It’s creative, quirky, alternative, bohemian, beautiful. It’s also expensive, ‘overrated,’ and too weird. Despite that, it’s on everyone’s lists to visit.

We didn’t plan to live here for 1/3 of my career break, but we ended up getting lucky and finding sublets with two different local families who took us in. The place we lived for 3 of those 4 months felt like a true home away from home.

Over time, I felt myself stop worrying (being on a career break is both liberating and terrifying 😅) and it was here that I truly felt like I “shed” my corporate identity for something new. Someone that could finally play and rest and try new things without needing to justify or quantify or productivity-maxx.

So here’s a mini travel guide and ode to one of my favorite places and what it gave me. If you visit, or if you come to live here for a little while, I hope these tips help give you what it gave me. Let me know what your ideal home away from home would feel like in the comments 🫶🏽 #OffDutyinByronBay #LivinginAustralia #ByronBay #CareerBreakDiaries

300 miles down, 9,700ish to go. This is part one.

If you missed the last video, Jacob and I are on a 3-month drive to complete Australia’s biggest road trip, aka Big Lap of Australia. Here’s how it all started and how it’s going on the first stretch!

Part One: ~300 miles
Byron
Noosa
Bundaberg

Highlights:
- the Noosa Coastal Trail
- snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef at Lady Elliot Island (day trip from Bundy!)
- Bundaberg Rum (a Queensland staple)
- camping at Splitters Farm
- the best strawberry ice cream at TinaBerries

I never expected my career break abroad to turn into a giant cross-country road trip but life is full of surprises and the longer we lived here, the more curious we became. We want to see it all, and I want to bring you along for the ride, because this is the first time in our adult lives we’ve been able to travel without limited PTO (vacation days) or time constraints!!

What would you do with your time if you had 3 months ahead and nothing holding you back?

In part two we’re heading to the outback!

This past year, we made a decision to finally take the leap and do something that’s been a dream at the back of my mind for ages.

And it only involved leaving my stable and impressive 6-figure job, his entire roster of clients, the country we were born in, the city we called home, our friends & family, and everything we know & have built behind 😅

Looking back, I firmly do believe there are no right or wrong decisions in this life. Only things we do, or don’t do, and how we see them through. We’re on the road as we speak, learning about & seeing as much of this beautiful country as our time allows, and trying to re-learn how to be present in a crazy world that often moves too quick.

I have no idea what’s next or how we come out from this 😅 but I do know we are already forever changed by taking a break, and taking a chance, to just live.

Have you ever wished to do something like this? If so, what’s holding you back? It took us 5+ years to work up the courage, and 3+ years to save up. So I get it!!!

If you’re new here, hi! Give us a follow @RachelOffDuty + @JacobsMedium to see more from this chapter as we travel around Oz 🤍🚗 #goingforthegap #lapofaustralia #careerbreak #gapyear
