A town. A mill. A legacy on the line.

When the paper mill that defined Canton, North Carolina suddenly closed, an entire community was forced to reckon with what comes next. Papertown captures this moment in real time, following the people left to navigate loss, uncertainty, and resilience.

This is a story about more than industry. It’s about identity, memory, and the fight to hold onto something that shaped generations.

The results are in, and New Union Films took home three Gold Addy Awards and a Judge’s Choice Award at the Charlotte American Advertising Awards last night for our project Power of the Land with Tilt36/DCI for Visit Haywood. It was a fun evening and a great honor to hang with some of the most creative minds here in North Carolina!

In 2023, one of the first projects for the film was creating our sizzle reel. Different from a trailer, this collection of early footage and scenes helps shape the developing story of the film and provides something to share with investors, partners and grants so that they can see how the story is unfolding. We love our sizzle and it’s served us well over these last few years. Take a watch and consider becoming a part by donating to our gofundme! (Link in bio) #papertown #documentaryfilm #gofundme

Our film about the closing of the paper mill in Canton, NC is almost finished, and we need your help! As soon as this story broke in March of 2023, we dove in straight away to capture in real time the shock and devistation that rippled through the community. Since then, our team has worked tirelessly, donating our time to continue to follow and capture this story. All funds that have been raised so far have allowed us to partner with a worldclass post-production team to take over 200 hours of footage and piece it together into a profound story of hope and resiliance displayed by the people of Canton, NC. As our inital team continues to work with no promise of compensation, we still need funds to get this film finished the way it should be. This is where we need your help! We are launching a GoFundMe campaign so that our friends, family and those who believe in this story can put skin in the game to help us complete the final color, sound, and music, so that this film is the best that it can be when we release in 2026. When this film hits streaming services nationwide, you can say you had a part in making it happen! In the same way we have seen the community of Canton band together with a common vision of protecting the history and building the future of the town, WE can band together to ensure this story reaches as far as possible in a time when many people accross the United States and beyond have had to wrestle with a very similar reality. The people of Canton are special. This story is special and we are excited to release it to the world. Join us!
