We had a blast at this year’s Avery County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner. It was a great evening with some even better people. We are blessed to be a part of this amazing community. 💪

I spent a few minutes trying to decide how to caption this post. Usually I’d spend my week flying somewhere fun, but this week we decided to load tools and things in the car and drive instead.

I started calling around to my North Carolina friends and we settled on a small area just outside the worst of it and hit the road. A buddy of mine had found a warehouse building, talked to the owner and is using it as a donation/ sorting center. We spent the last two days working with the Air Force and Army National Guard (who’ve been sleeping on cots at the local YMCA) sorting through clothes, food, household supplies, etc. Trucks have been coming in with supplies since the storm.

What they need now more than anything is manpower and realistically money. People have lost homes, jobs, vehicles, and possessions and it’s gonna take a long time for people to recover fully.

Huge shoutout to @jacobwizeman for having a space for us to stay and helping us get involved. If you’re ever in the area, @linvillefallswinery is 100% a place you need to go.

FIRST HARVEST OF THE SEASON! 🍇

Marquette is a French-American hybrid grape, meaning that it was developed through cross-fertilization to create a grape with European flavor characteristics, but having the hardiness and disease-resistance of an American grapevine. It was developed by the University of Minnesota and released in 2006. It was hybridized to be a cold-hardy grape that could ripen in their short season and survive their winters, even in USDA zone 4, so it’s always the first to ripen for us here in zone 6! Marquette is actually a grandchild of Pinot Noir, although the grapes are very different from each other. Marquette is a deep, dark grape with thick skins, and creates a wine with a good amount of body.
