Contrary to reports, Downtown Los Angeles is alive and it’s here that we have our exhibition “My House Burned Down” focused on artists whose homes were destroyed by fire. Track 16’s downtown location is at the busiest part of the Fashion District next to Santee Alley, which is one of the most vibrant centers where working class Latin American folk come to shop. Many of our neighbors are scared and on high alert. Raids have been going on here for months. What’s new is the militant amplification. Neighbors are watching to help out and speak up if they see ICE, the same way volunteers stepped up for their communities during the Eaton and Palisades fires. (See our IG story for what to do if you see ICE in your community.) Downtown LA is safe and alive. Come visit. We’re in the first floor of the Bendix Building at the end of the lobby. Pictured is a photograph by @jacycatlin who lost his rural Wisconsin home in 2021. “My House Burned Down” was curated by @camillataylor and continues through 6/28.

CURATOR’S STATEMENT

When your identity and purpose are rooted in making objects, what happens when all of those objects are reduced to ash? What becomes of the artist when not just the studio, but the home, the archives, the tools, the detritus of life—everything—is gone?

My House Burned Down brings together artists who have experienced the destruction of their home by fire. The exhibition includes those affected by the recent Los Angeles fires of 2025, as well as others who have endured individual, isolated blazes. It asks: how does fire shape artmaking in the days that follow catastrophe? And how does it continue to burn years—or decades—later?

After the fire, many people tried to comfort me with the image of the phoenix rising from the ashes—rebirth, transformation, triumph. But I don’t feel reborn. I don’t feel triumphant. I feel exhausted. I feel the literal loss of everything I’ve ever owned, and it is, frankly, incredibly inconvenient.

This exhibition is not about inspiration or silver linings. It’s about the complex emotional, practical, and artistic aftermath of disaster. I eschewed any subtext in titling the show, and trusted the artists to find meaning in disaster rather than ascribing it to them. What’s left behind when everything burns?

My House Burned Down
Group Show
Curated by Camilla Taylor

Saturday, April 26, 6-9 pm
Track 16 Downtown LA
1206 Maple Ave, Suite 100, Los Angeles
Through June 28, 2026

Curated by Camilla Taylor, My House Burned Down brings together a powerful group of artists whose homes were destroyed by fire. Some were affected by the 2025 Los Angeles fires; others have lived through isolated blazes. Together, they confront not rebirth, but the raw, inconvenient truth of catastrophic loss.

This isn’t about phoenixes or silver linings. It’s about the quiet devastation, the burned edges of a life once built, and how those experiences shape what gets made afterward. Sculpture, drawing, and installation reveal an emotional terrain where exhaustion, anger, and quiet endurance coexist. Taylor doesn’t ask artists to transcend their grief—she asks what’s left behind when everything burns.

Featuring new and recent works by Christina Bothwell, Jacy Catlin, Jamison Carter, Margaret Griffith, John Knuth, Linn Meyers, Catherine Ruane, and Camilla Taylor.

Losing your home to a fire is traumatic.
To process the devastation after his northern Wisconsin home burned down, comedian Jacy Catlin starting filming the aftermath.
And making jokes about it.
Then, @jacycatlin and his buddy @jojopickett made a short movie.
Hear them talk about it on @wisconsinpublicradio.
