“A history carried through people, behaviour, stories, food, art and images today more present than ever. Freedom, a word that held weight for generations and one we sometimes forget how to truly feel. It makes us question what freedom is now, what Surinamese people of our generation may think, feel and reminds us that the freedom our people once sought is still a struggle for many others today. Let us pause for their fight as well. Not as one people, but as individuals who embody a place in this world, a past and a future.
 We celebrate 50 years of independence. Half a century of strength, struggle, love and growth. And within that greater history lives our personal story.
 These words are for my grandmother, the woman who carried her family with love, strength and determination. Because of her I stand here. Because of her I carry history, hope and future within me. I am grateful to be part of what she once began.
 Today we honor Suriname.
But I also honor her.
Her beginning is my foundation.
Her strength lives on in me. Fifty years of independence and fifty years of legacy for us to continue carrying forward” #srefidensi #suriname
