Two years ago, Emergence: Art from Life opened at the JACCC in Little Tokyo, presented by @fathomers as part of Getty’s PST ART: Art & Science Collide. By approaching synthetic biology through an artistic lens, it unsettled definitions of what is natural, synthetic, conscious, and essential to existence. On March 28th, we celebrated its life in print 📖🎉💗

What started as a modest idea for a zine became ten volumes — one for each of the nine projects in the show, and a tenth that connects threads from across the exhibition. A collective making, co-edited by myself and Stacy Switzer, curator and executive director @fathomers. Comprising photographs, essays, interviews, poetry, peer-reviewed research papers, and a range of other media, the volumes serve as both archive of the individual projects and of the ideas that inspired them, creating a vessel in which the questions at the heart of the exhibition were given two years to mature, becoming richer, more layered, and more intertwined.

The catalog was designed by @slg.pdf and @zhllumimi of @sat.grey, printed by El Sereno Graphics and @martian.press, all in Los Angeles 🙌🏾✨

Thank you to the whole @fathomers team for trusting me so generously with this work ☺️🫶🏾 And thank you to EVERYONE whose hands touch this project. My intention has always been to broaden where science belongs, and to create spaces where curiosity is the only entry requirement. A room full of people engaging with our catalog and the experimental, artist-led programming so openly and joyfully felt like the purest manifestation of that intention ☺️🙏🏾💓

On March 28th we celebrated the release of Emergence, a ten-volume publication based on the exhibition Emergence: Art from Life, which was part of Getty’s 2024 PST ART: Art & Science Collide.

As our Executive Director & Curator, Stacy Switzer said on the evening of the release:

The great works of art and innovations that nourish us and even heal us require some latitude, some risk, some support before the full results can be known.

With regard to Emergence, almost all of the projects in this exhibition were entirely new commissions. The work took us a long time because it was developed anew, in the still-unfolding space between art and biology – a space that is right now being crafted, authored, contested – it’s space that does not exist until we make it. This takes time, and in the best case, a lot of trust among excellent collaborators.

I’m proud of the Emergence catalog because I can say with some confidence that I don’t believe there is any other book out there like it, in terms of the seriousness with which it broaches the science, the experimental and collective spirit of making reflected in it, and a commitment to readers in terms of offering many different points of entry into the work. Emergence advocates for the idea that we all have something important to bring to conversations about what the future will look like, and at the same time, it’s okay to not know how something is going to turn out.

-Stacy Switzer, Executive Director & Curator, Fathomers

Fathomers’ extended community of artists, scientists, and synthetic biology enthusiasts, along with curious newcomers, recently gathered to celebrate the release of the Emergence catalog, a ten-volume collection based on the exhibition Emergence: Art from Life.

Emergence explores how artists and scientists engage with synthetic biology to imagine new forms of life, agency, and authorship. First as an exhibition and now in print, the project convenes thinkers from a variety of backgrounds to explore how synthetic biology and art-making can energize and inform each other.

The celebration unfolded at the historic York Manor, and included a Petri dish DJ, an Ask the Oracle booth featuring global experts at the frontiers of art and synthetic biology, and more.

The Emergence catalog is available now. Link in bio.

This past weekend marked the celebration of Emergence, a live art exhibit produced & presented by the @fathomers with Afro Rithm Futures Group, co-founded by Ahmed Best and Dr. Lonny. The project brought together an inspiring mix of collaborators: choreographers, artist and synthetic biologists to create a multidisciplinary experience that bridges the worlds of performance art and science.

The exhibit has since been immortalized as part of a 10-volume catalogue . A stunning collection that now preserves this creative milestone in print. The event was also a community moment, drawing together friends and supporters who showed up to celebrate the intersection of Afro-diasporic culture, movement, and biological science.

⭕️Emergence stands as a testament to what becomes possible when art and science are allowed to inform and inspire each other.
