When I designed the visual treatment for Amina Smith’s episode of How She Moves, I knew I wanted to go beyond a traditional sit-down interview and create visual moments that added another layer to her story. 🎬 My EP @raashauna and I cast Jade Smith as a young track runner. I wanted to include visual vignettes throughout the episode that could have a dual meaning. Jade could represent both a younger Amina and a young woman inspired by her path. It fit perfectly with this moment because Amina reflects on the women in sports who inspired her and paved the way. “Women Who Set the Pace” became both literal and symbolic🏃🏽‍♀️ Loved this moment with Amina. When she spoke about her purpose, I remember deeply feeling her answer as she shared the importance of bringing other women up and helping others along the way. 🩷☺️ CU shot of our young actress Lauryn. She was the sweetest! 🫶🏽☺️ I’ve worked with kids a lot on set and I’ve found that explaining what’s happening and showing them exactly what we’re capturing from the beginning really helps when directing them. Here I’m just showing Lauryn one of her angles on the monitor so she could see how she looked on camera. 🎥 Jade was great! I found out she runs track in real life so everything aligned perfectly. 🙏🏽🥹🏃🏽‍♀️ Lauryn on screen 🎥 I love when my crew captures BTS like this. We had a total of 3 cameras for the interview setup, but this one was my favorite. We shot with DZOFilm Arles Prime lenses. This is the 35mm T1.4. 🎥 Lloyd, our main DP on set during the actual interview. @ctrlthem Elijah, our main DP for all of the curated scenes and visual vignettes we captured outside. He brought the vision to life! 🎥 @elijahkarriem I always like to have a BTS photographer on set. I really like this overhead shot.
