« Histoires de femmes » premiered at Amsterdam Fashion Week.
After a year of thoughts and reflexions, « Histoires de femmes » took its final shape a few weeks before its public presentation. By going back into my memories, my notes and my personal archives I was able to tell more about how I experience the world. « Histoires de femmes » (Women’s stories) was born from the reminiscences of the places I call home. I remember the streets of these cities, the activity of women, the way they inhabit the public space. Entrepreneurial women, elegant, ambitious, "potomitants". I tell you how we occupy the cities, how we experience the street through our women’s bodies. These streets that we walk every day and in which we have grown up. « « Histoires de femmes » (Women’s stories) was born from the reminiscences of the places I call home. I remember the streets of these cities, the activity of women, the way they inhabit the public space. Entrepreneurial women, elegant, ambitious, "potomitants". I tell you how we occupy the cities, how we experience the street through our women’s bodies. These streets that we walk every day and in which we have grown up.
In 2019, Roxane Mbanga is in West Africa. In Nigeria and then in Senegal, she asks women to wear Boubous, while being naked underneath. She makes them walk in public spaces, streets, crossroads and markets. Their experiences are recounted in « Naked Underneath or How to use clothes to assert oneself? ».  « Histoires de femmes » takes up and expands the research of « Naked Underneath or How to Use Clothes to Assert Oneself? » on the reappropriation of the self. Both essay and manifesto, diary and travelogue, the play moves the audience between the past and the present, between Dakar, Lagos, Abidjan, Paris and Amsterdam. Like a griot, the artist tells the words of women, exploring the streets of her memory... The street.
Four living paintings. A woman washes the clothes of her clients. A woman reads the newspaper in front of a newsstand. A saleswoman sells Boubous on the side of the road. A hairdresser braids her client's hair. » Creative Direction: @mbanga.mbanga.mbanga Performers: @bahghi_ @cyshgothardt @dalma.cza @gabriela.koster @mbanga.mbanga.mbanga Vocalists: @cyshgothardt @gabriela.koster @kroessekrulle @zulugreen Sound designer: @phantom.wizard Co-stage director: @itsnoelofficial
