The last week or so…why don’t you vote for fall to be year round rather than politicians and questions!

“Today, China & the United States are co-creating a powerful new technology that changes how we think, communicate with each other & understand what consciousness itself means,” @jadrey writes: AI.

Yet the two countries couldn’t be more different when it comes to their overall outlook on its development: pragmatic optimism in China versus existential pessimism in the U.S.

This may largely be driven by opposing views of who ultimately benefits from the technology, he argues at the link in our bio.

“This generation of humans might actually be able to biohack its way into longer lives,” @jadrey writes.

“We are rapidly coming to understand information about human bodies that touches upon our creation & would traditionally have been ascribed to a realm of divine knowledge — maps of human proteins, the science of sleep.”

And yet, even as “technologically driven increases to human lifespans seem to be on the horizon, our species has taken on a kind of suicide mentality: Far fewer people are having children.”

Head to the link in our bio to see what he believes this portends for civilizational futures.

The Springfield Federal Courthouse is by one of the greatest living architects. Moshe Safdie is most famous for Habitat 67, among the great utopian projects of the 20th century. Safdie believed modern housing didn’t have to mean endless apartment blocks or suburban sprawl. Built for Expo 67 in Montreal, it was meant to show that high-density housing could still give people light, air, privacy, and even gardens. The problem was that the construction was so complicated and expensive that it never became the model for mass housing Safdie envisioned. In that sense it failed. But standing there today, it’s hard not to wish we had more idealistic housing, rather than everything aimed at simply maximizing efficiency or profit.

Where does #suburbanlife reach perfection. This isn’t about statistics - although they tend to back up my conclusion. It’s a combination of factors that involve economics, development patterns, and just the “feel”. Interesting that Boston doesn’t offer a definitively better suburb and #centralma isn’t even in the running with #westernma for this one. Do Hartford or New Haven have a perfect #1920s suburb?

At 371 feet, Monarch Place is the tallest building in Massachusetts outside Boston with 775k square feet of office, hotel, retail and parking. This speculative financial tower is on the lot where legendary department store Forbes and Wallace once stood.

Early 90s office vacancy rates in New England secondary cities were catastrophic — often above 20%. Monarch Life was a casualty of the Savings and Loan crisis that ended Springfield’s 1980s economic revival. #westernmassachusetts #monarchlife #springfieldma #springfielddowntown

A journey across Mongolia’s freezing and expansive plains becomes a reckoning with sobriety and solitude. Jacob Dreyer reflects on his visits to Mongolia: the rituals of nomadic life, the impact of a technological detox and the peculiar freedom found in a country landlocked by the world’s biggest autocratic powers.

Late on the bandwagon but here's 2016 as my phone remembers it, nostalgia goggles clouded from recalling anything political.

(Suspiciously ITT-bereft -- was my storage hacked by the CAC? -- you'll have to send me some pics, preferably by email @eliosheyack @alvin.jiahuan.li @apieceofpinkvelvet.)

“Trump’s America is beginning to look more like China”. Another “if it was my illustration” series based on NYT Opinion articles. I’m reimagining the illustrations for recent articles out on the NYT, as I would draw them my own way. This article by Jacob Dreyer @jadrey was on NYT Opinion on July 1st.

“The real-estate developer Aranya, with its links to the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, has made this spot into a Chinese answer to Brighton – a tiny patch of the capital located 300 kilometres away.” Yibing Sun and Jacob Dreyer break the fourth wall of Aranya, a luxury real estate development community in Hebei Province, China, where Xanadu meets The Truman Show. ♻️ The Circularity issue is here!

In Mallorca, H Arquitectes have turned sandstone from an existing building into nougat-like blocks while in the south of France, rice straw and sunflower stems make new building materials at @luma_arles. Whole components are integrated into fantastical concoctions in the work of Marcel Raymackers and transplanted across borders to relieve housing shortages in Ukraine. In Copenhagen and Hangzhou, entire buildings are transformed and reused. But circular design principles fit awkwardly into linear capitalist production processes. As Michaël Ghyoot and Tom Schoonjans of @rotor_brussels write in the keynote, ‘The current capitalist configuration simply does not tolerate curbing exploitation.’

AR May 2025 features projects by @pihlmann, @harquitectes, @urko_sanchez_architects, @bcarchitectsandstudies, @assembleofficial, Atelier Luma, Laurie Baker, @bovenbouw.architectuur, @bauburoinsitu, @jiakunarchitects and TLS Landscape Architecture, with writing by, @manon.mollard, Christophe Van Gerrewey, @eabeaumont, @mortenbirk_architecture, @kristinarapacki, Adam Przywara and more.
