It’s difficult working on an event for so long that can be ruined by variables outside of your control. As the forecast worsened over the last couple of days, I admittedly was becoming pretty dejected.

Yesterday I was thinking about who this event is for - people who are very special to me that have dealt with variables outside of their control for much of their life, and I stopped feeling sorry for myself.

Thanks to the support and quick action of our Lancaster schools, police department, medical team, and so many volunteers and contractors, we took the unconventional route of moving forward with two Unified 5Ks. One this morning, and a larger, more produced one in 4 weeks.

We set up this morning not knowing if anyone would show up in freezing rain and 20+ mph winds. But instead, several hundred did.

For some, it was their first race ever (and hopefully not their last!) while others showed up to guide and give someone else a chance to cross the finish line.

The race this morning was far from what I envisioned, but as I’ve scrolled through more than a thousand photos this afternoon, it tells an incredible story of people who handle variables outside of their control with grace and determination; and of a community that shows up for others. I’ve always wanted my life to make someone else’s a little bit better. And despite the weather today, I think we did that.

See you on June 27th. We’re onto Salt Lake City and Cumberland.
