I am a second-generation federal employee. By now, you’ve seen the news, and by now, it feels like I’ve been a sad, broken record all week. Thousands of federal workers who protect and dedicate their entire lives to historic lands were illegally laid off this week due to the new administration from DOGE.

These beautiful places are your favorite destinations to visit with your family, or places you’ve always wished to see. These workers clean the bathrooms, give safety talks, and help plan your entire trip. These are people that hike for miles and pick invasive weeds and cut down hazard trees. They are veterans. They build trails, bridges, and entire new roads. They fight forest fires, often for minimum wage. They are law enforcement officers and medical professionals working to keep the public safe. These are people with families who have spent their entire lives determined and dedicated to this career—my dad, mom, brother, and now me.

None of these recent actions will help public lands or the people who fight for them(and now especially the people that visit them). Now, we are witnessing a lack of basic understanding of what it truly takes to meet the demands of these federal organizations and fulfill their mission. They exist for the land and for the people.

I will continue to fight with my friends and fellow federal workers for the protection of public lands in this country.

To take action contact congress at npca.org/jobcuts and call your reps. Share federal workers stories ❤️
