Tomorrow (Thursday) is the day!!!!! Here’s everything you need to know. You can still join us. We’ll take ticket purchases right at the door, so if you’ve been on the fence, just show up. Bring your camera and a tripod. Throw a warm layer or two in the car too, since it can get cool once the sun goes down. Your instructor is Juan Aguilera. The man knows his craft, and getting to learn from him under the stars is a rare thing. We’re timing this to the Perseid meteor shower. If the sky turns foggy or smoky and the meteors hide, we’re pivoting to light painting, so you’ll walk away with new skills either way. Here’s the part I love most: every dollar of profit from this class goes straight to Through the Lens, our free bilingual mobile youth photography program. By showing up tomorrow, you’re helping kids in our valley get their hands on a camera and access to this art. Think of the children. And yes, there will be excellent wine. I could not be more excited. See you at Mongata!

You’ll walk away from Mongata on August 13 having actually photographed the Perseids. Not just watched them. Photographed them, with a glass of wine in you and Juan Aguilera’s settings still fresh in your head. That’s the feeling we’re going for. Standing under a sky full of falling stars, camera in hand, knowing exactly what to do with it. Juan Aguilera is walking you through everything before you ever step outside. Settings, composition, the whole thing. Then you get to point your camera at a sky doing something you’ve never seen before. 6:30 to 8:30, we’re inside with wine learning how to actually shoot the gorgeous meteor shower. 8:30 to 9:30, we’re outside under the Perseids putting it to use. All skill levels. All cameras. $55 gets you in the door with a bottle of Mongata wine. Everything above $36 goes straight to Through the Lens, putting cameras in kids’ hands across the valley. Scholarship seats available, just reach out before you register. Link in bio!

Happy #WildlifeWednesday! The official Skagit Eagle Festival is over, but that doesn’t mean you still won’t see a few Bald eagles flying on the river. 🦅 From late December to early January, the North Cascades witnesses the largest population of wintering bald eagles. Dozens of eagles can be seen daily migrating along the Skagit river. 🦅 Eagles are one of America’s greatest success story. They almost went extinct in the mid/late twentieth century due to the use of the pesticide DDT. 🦅 Due to regulations on DDT (which negatively effected an adult bird’s ability to metabolize calcium, leaving their eggs too fragile to survive to hatching,) the birds have made a tremendous comeback. In 2007, the species had recovered enough to be taken off the endangered species list entirely. Did you attend the Skagit eagle festival this year? What was it like seeing Bald eagles soar over the magic Skagit? 📸: jaguilera66

Happy #WildlifeWednesday! The bald eagle is a bird of prey found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old growth trees for nesting. Their winter migration to the North Cascades provides an opportunity to observe & photograph them in groups, feeding along riverbeds or roosting in trees in numbers that only occur from December to February when they come from as far as Alaska to feast on carcasses of salmon that have spawned, then die along the upper Skagit River. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To see eagles up close: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦅 Use a telescope, binoculars, or a telephoto lens⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦅 Keep noise low and your movements slow ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦅 Don’t drive and bird, pull over whenever possible, stay in your car and use it as a blind from which to photograph eagles.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦅 Stay away from the river’s edge & gravel bars where eagles are feeding, especially in the morning ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦅 Use public areas along rivers and be courteous to local land owners. Do not walk across private property. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Skagit Eagle festival takes place every weekend in January- mid February. For more info, check out the Skagit river interpretive center website: Skagiteagle.org⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📸: @jaguilera66⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📍Ancestral homelands of the Upper Skagit, Swinomish, Nlaka’pamux & Sauk-Suiattle people
