Week 2 of what I am affectionately referring to as SAMPLEMAY (caps mandatory) went swimmingly!! I had a great time sampling up the coast, first @nhmla then @calacademy (thank you @zaraallen for the assist!) before spending some time with former Emslie lab PhD student Dr. Mike Polito to collect some more Antarctic seal samples! Not sure Dr. Ted Cheeseman is on socials but THANK YOU (ad infinitum) to him and Renee for being such phenomenal hosts and taking me surfing! Make sure to know your whales with @happywhale_official

Made sure to have some fun (and burritos!) along the way visiting with friends, family, and colleagues I haven't worked with in YEARS, and another massive thank you to @sudbala for helping me check my massive cooler (@americanair
slay for leaving on time). Saw a gray whale and otters during surf sessions out west (EPIC) making this sampling trip one for the books!! Really excited to turn these samples into data that will help us understand how Antarctic seals recovered from historic hunting.

I am impelled to add that marine mammal parts (including milk, which I have LOTS of) are protected under the marine mammal protection act (MMPA), a fantastic piece of legislature that does WORK to protect marine mammals in US waters and abroad. I am authorized to transfer (and ultimately analyze) marine mammal parts as an authorized receiver under MMPA permit # 25786-01 (NOAA samples) and as a collaborator with @uncw.mmsp under NOAA SER-SA-SE 2025-001

Slay! #seal #marinebiology #minoritiesinstem #ocean #science
