Joseph Royal leads the way through Week 2. The Middletown quarterback sits at 491 passing yards, with Valley Central’s Andrew Waite at 479 and Warwick’s Eric Milisauskas at 468. Just 23 yards separate the top three.

Spackenkill’s Jalon Morgan holds fourth with 432 yards, while Beacon’s Delano Rigby Jr. rounds out the top five at 399.

AA has real QB star power this year. One of these quarterbacks can easily end up being crowned Player of the Year in 2026.

Barnwell. Maldonado. Royal. Seven varsity seasons and three sectional championships combined between three quarterbacks who could help decide the biggest-school race in Section 9.

Barnwell and Maldonado enter their third and final varsity season. Royal enters year four as a junior. That is a rare amount of experience in one class, at one position, in one title race.

This quarterback race is bigger than stats. Jaiseon Barnwell has already lived two different kinds of heartbreak at Newburgh: a sophomore season where the Goldbacks’ playoff run was taken away by off-field sanctions, then a junior season where Newburgh beat Middletown during the regular season but got upset by the Middies at home in the semifinals. Ethan Maldonado enters his final season at Monroe-Woodbury as a two-time Section 9 champion, chasing a third straight title run. Joseph Royal, also a Section 9 Champion, has been starting for Middletown since middle school (7th Grade), and every year he has started for the Middies, they have reached the section championship. Last year, Middletown started 1-4, moved Royal back to quarterback, and still found a way to knock off Newburgh in the playoffs.
