“how i met your mother” - here’s a story of my family:

1990: my mom, director of the Student Athletic Board at Indiana University, opened her door to interview a current chairman to be director. That chairman was my dad, and he got the job, then asked her out. Young love with a touch of nepotism.

1991: every guy has a wingman; my dads wingman was IU sports. My parents get engaged on campus in Bloomington.

1992: my parents get married at the tailgating church across the street from the IU football stadium, followed by their reception in the ballroom underneath the football field.

1997: i came into the world wrapped in an Indiana Hoosiers infant jumpsuit.

2000: I didn’t quite know the alphabet but I could recite the entire Indiana basketball team, football starters, and a few IU baseball players, including my grandpa who pitched for IU in the 1970s.

2002: my first memory —> my parents + aunt and uncle roadtripped me and all my cousins to Atlanta for the Final Four. the Hoosiers lost in the national championship. I cried the entire 8 hour drive back to Indiana.

2003: i was introduced to the term “tailgating” and it forever changed the way I viewed Septembers, Octobers, and Novembers.

2007: IU sports made me cry again, this time happy tears, as Austin Starr kicked a 49 yard field goal to beat Purdue for our 7th win to clinch a bowl game. The first bowl game in my lifetime. And yes it was my Super Bowl.

2007-2011: *adolescent stage of development* I learned to wholeheartedly despise Purdue and Ohio State. Deeply.

2011: high school freshman Abe quit all fall sports because it was interfering with Indiana football tailgates and gamedays with my cousins, who were (and are) some of my best friends. Priorities. IU football went 1-11 that season, yet Saturdays in Bloomington were still Christmas for us.
