If this is 35 … I can’t wait to be 40. Not many people know this but I played Violin from age 8-19 and toured China with a Philharmonic Orchestra. I was a nerd at school and tried really hard (Subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths and English… I did the music exams and photography boards without taking the subject).

If you had told 16 year old me I would become a motorcycle mechanic, join the army, live in India, build a House, become a professional Firefighter and Mum at 26 I wouldn’t have believed any of that.

Life’s funny how quickly it can change if you say yes to things. I’m gonna keep going and see what else we can add to that list haha.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, I feel really loved. (Though the truth is I was in the fetal position waiting for painkillers to kick in and with a hot water bottle strapped to my back).

This year my priority is to fix my back. Then we are on.

Xiao Hong addresses fashion as an expression of identity and connection. This collection stemmed from my curiosity in exploring my cultural heritage. I was adopted from China as a baby and raised in New Zealand. A central element of my sustainable practice has been using natural fibres and natural dye. This decision is not just for the aesthetic; the fabrics used (cotton and silk/cotton) support the relaxed silhouettes of the garments and the rust dye technique created brought in a warm colour and made unique patterns that transformed the bare fabrics into feature pieces.
