James Evans è un artista e scrittore originario di New York, attualmente residente a Londra, dove sta completando il suo MFA presso Goldsmiths. È cresciuto in Colorado e ha studiato scrittura creativa presso la University of Colorado at Boulder, prima di trasferirsi a New York.

James Evans is an artist and writer from New York, currently living in London as he completes his MFA at Goldsmiths. James grew up in Colorado and studied creative writing at the University of Colorado at Boulder before relocating to New York. He has shown in solo and group shows internationally.

His time in Bienno is split between writing and painting, as he is both working on a longer form fiction project and continuing a series of paintings on mesh. Both practices explore similar conceptual terrain and continually inform one another. Evans works in both figuration and abstraction, with the mesh functioning as an intermediary, a material defined by its own negative space. The supports he builds for these screens and the ways in which they interact with the room become just as critical as his painted surfaces.

Yesterday I had an amazing day at #goldsmithsuniversityoflondon, seeing seven MFA Fine Art students as a visiting tutor, with each artist given 50 minutes for an extended #crit with me. The expectation is always that the student learns something from the tutor, however, such was the sophistication of these young artists’ creative enterprises that I left asking more questions than I arrived with. Fanie Buys explores the power structures at play in the genre of portraiture, revealing that revered tradition to be a damnable delta of calumny, but now Queered like a plume of poppers to trickle back through time and reposition pillars of class, race, self and sex. Zhiying Chen’s malleable abstractions delight in elegant restraint, only to surrender to murmurations of marks that break down painting to its very DNA. James Evans makes painting-objects that test the status of both the act of painting and the nature of ‘objectness’, serving work that - literally - allows the viewer to see through each aspect of its physical and intellectual construction. Jiyoung Pyo takes her viewer to the shadows of her Korean homeland; a space where womanhood is constantly interrogated and (re)calibrated by a male gaze which her paintings contest and ultimately usurp. Arianna Montoya Carvajal, likewise, focuses on the Feminine and Female as tested in her own homeland of Costa Rica. Quiet, knocked-back, pastel-palettes at first soothe only to sting as they whisper (then howl) moments from hardship to abuse. Alaina Cherry paints juicy, beaverish scenes of domestic interiors filled with protagonists, all of whom are her own self-portrait, asking her viewer to witness her own confessions - tactile and tender; passive yet dominant. Finally, Sandy Kim’s pluralist arc embraces performance, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramic and video. Using their body as their conceptual point of departure, theirs is a world that identifies identity as an abundance of self and other; an effusion of limb, skin, touch, mind and desire, all engaged in the same caressing flow of life, love and loss. Fabulous work by seven wonderful artists. A great day. #onetowatch #emergingart #emergingartists
