Deadbeat 1 Year Anniversary!

It doesn’t feel real that it’s only been a year since this album came out honestly. I feel like more or less my opinion has stayed the exact same with this album, especially after seeing a majority of it live. It’s one of the best he’s made, and I won’t shy away from saying that over and over again, he truly put his heart in soul into this record, and I’ll never get enough of it just like his other albums.

BEHIND THE LYRICS // 004 🎞️

PAINT ME SILVER — POND

We’re taking a step beyond @TameImpala for Issue 004 and looking at another of Perth’s most distinctive psychedelic bands. @Ponderers.

Released in 2017 on their album The Weather, “Paint Me Silver” is one of the band’s most recognisable tracks, mixing a catchy pop hook with their own psychedelic sound.

But the story behind the song starts with a pretty unexpected message.

@NiqueAllbrook explained in an interview that, while walking the Bibbulmun Track, he received a text from his friend Amber Fresh of Rabbit Island. The message included the bizarre line about being painted silver and called “Herman Hesse.”

Allbrook thought it was beautifully poetic, and the idea grew from there.

That strange, playful starting point feels fitting for a song whose lyrics don’t follow one straightforward story. The words leave plenty of room for interpretation, with surreal imagery and unusual phrases taking centre stage rather than spelling everything out.

There’s an interesting musical detail behind it, too. Pond initially experimented with sampling for The Weather, and @Jay.W.Watson explained that the main hook of “Paint Me Silver” came from a Todd Rundgren and Utopia track.

It’s a great example of how something as random as a text from a friend can become the starting point for a song that reaches far beyond its original idea.

Couldn’t have thought of a better way to cap off the “End Of Summer” than to have the privilege of photographing Tame Impala at Toyota Center

An insanely surreal experience that I will hold with me for some time. Those who know me know how much this, and the music means to me. Tame Impala quite literally opened the door to so many things, people and opportunities I don’t think I would have been able to get, and to have been given the chance to cover one of his final shows in the states for this year is definitely a full circle moment, especially considering how this show was only days away from the five year mark of seeing tame live. 22 shows in and the flame is far from dying down.
