Farewell, 17 Coney Green.

I am distraught. The family home is gone. I no longer have an anchor in Winchester. My dad’s life is confined to a few boxes. This has been the most challenging year of my life anyway, and now I’m grieving for him all over again. I’m prone to cry or sink into a catatonic state.

But good things are happening and I’ve got an absolute rock in Dika. She sadly never met my dad, but I know they would have got on—through terrible banter and a shared love of Saints. Dika fixed up the house, showed it the love it deserved, and helped move my things out across nine different days. Together, we’ve been preserving items belonging to my parents and grandparents or finding new homes for them. Thank you so much. I love you immensely.

And, as much as I tend to fight it, change is necessary. So, I’ll attempt to move on with gratitude.

I am thankful for all the good times that I spent in that house with my family (and friends). They were all made possible by my dad, Malcolm Ross.

💡 New Publication: I am highly pleased to share that our paper, "Unifying Grounding through Fundamentality"—co-authored with James Clark Ross (@jamesclarkross)—has been formally accepted for publication in Philosophical Inquiries.

Our paper will feature in the forthcoming book symposium dedicated to Louis deRosset’s monograph, Fundamental Things (Oxford University Press, 2023).

About the Paper 🧠

In this work, we defend the fruitful connection between the contemporary debate surrounding the unity of grounding and the core tenets of deRosset's metaphysical project.

What a f***ing experience. Metallica. Twice in one weekend. I’ve seen them plenty of times, but this felt different—awe, euphoria, borderline religious. Sharing it with mates and watching London turn into one big metalhead pilgrimage was special.

Dika and I absolutely loved our stay at @millingtonsmagicalbarn animal sanctuary (for Dika’s birthday). We highly recommend visiting. It’s a sacred place for animals who have been given a second chance at life. I came away feeling inspired by the dedication and mental strength of the volunteers and by the animals themselves, though saddened by the need for the sanctuary’s existence.

These animals were saved from humans: our cruelty, our malice, and our callous disregard. Yet the evils inflicted upon them are hardly exceptional: they occur every waking second on Earth, funded by us. Our egregious practices put BILLIONS of sentient creatures a year into cramped and unnatural conditions. These animals are prevented from living anywhere near a natural lifespan. They are mutilated. They are separated from their offspring. Then they are slaughtered. All so we can consume and use their bodies. This is an injustice on an unfathomable scale, unlike any other.

Nevertheless, I was struck by the excellent care being provided at Millington’s Magical Barn. The sanctuary houses alpacas, chickens, cows, donkeys, ducks, geese, goats, pigs, sheep, and more, all of whom have plenty of space. They seemed calm and happy. Like us, they have their political problems. But, as far as I could tell, the life of each individual animal exemplifies a good life—at least according to the way I’ve been thinking about animal ethics recently (broadly in an Aristotelian way).

Just by looking out the window, I witnessed various animals enjoying activities that are characteristic of their specific forms of life. Ducks were going about their duck activities, living between water and land—floating, paddling, and dabbling; waddling around and nesting together. Cows, donkeys, goats, and sheep were grazing and scrambling across the varied terrain. Donkeys sensitively and serenely kept each other company.

Interacting with these animals was an amazing experience (even when I was headbutted by a goat—fair play). I was more than happy to wonder about their complex lives and admire them from a distance...

Yesterday was magical. Few things have the power to unify people as football does. Family, mates, partners, school friends, teammates, colleagues—in London together. They laughed, got each other drinks, sang in unison, and, remembering what hope feels like, believed again. You just can’t beat it. #saintsfc #yellows 💛
