The eye goes to the crowd first - heat, motion, the pull to belong. It takes a second to notice what’s gliding behind them: a cargo ship, indifferent, carrying the world’s goods past a thousand people carrying nothing but themselves.
Hawke paints joy and industry sharing the same horizon line representing Knokke seaside.
I felt energized!

Morning light, the sea, and James Hawke’s bold coastal vision — a perfect pairing for my walk into the gallery.
His painting feels like a vivid echo of the quiet horizon I saw on the way in today: expansive, layered, and full of movement.
James transforms the shoreline into something both familiar and beautifully imagined, where colour, scale, and atmosphere meet with striking clarity.

I’ve been a fan of @jameshawkepainter artwork for a few years now!! So naturally I had to see his work in person at @tomcoxgallery space.

James’ work is fascinating to look at and observe in person- you can see the intricacies of his brushstroke and precise movements. Further away you can relish in the flatness and vibrancy of colour, but up close you’re challenged to push past the absurdity of the shapes and observe the fluidity of each stroke that create this beautiful meditation about each scene.
Also I wanna go to a beach now but alas

We’re excited to announce our latest spotlight exhibition featuring the work of James Hawke

Spanning an entire wall, this presentation brings together a selection of paintings across a range of palettes, all drawn from his long-running Poolside series. Since 1998, this body of work has explored the vivid, illusory world of holiday imagery.

Each painting is meticulously constructed over the course of up to two months, built from hundreds of carefully rendered shapes using a precise, flat painting technique. Working full-time as an artist since leaving college, Hawke’s practice has evolved into a focused exploration of painting, supported by preparatory drawing.

At the heart of these works is a fascination with human interaction; figures interwoven within patterns of body, Lycra, and landscape. Come down to the Gallery and take a look!

Running from the 9th -19th April
