Ohio’s own @backcountryhunters supporters showed up for public lands and helped with a woodcock habitat project on Caesar Creek State Park Wildlife Area this Sunday! We started out with a venison hot dog lunch topped wild game chili…Cincinnati style! 🌭Thanks to Hagan Messer and crew from @your_wild_ohio at the Spring Valley Wildlife Area Shooting Range Education Center for providing the goods!

We then hit the woods. Specifically, we hit a bunch of cottonwoods and some maples with hatchets, then used spray bottles to squirt chemicals into the wound, with the goal of killing the tree, thinning out the canopy, and building out regions of successional habitat that woodcock and other critters will love.

It was also a heck of a lot of fun and we even picked up a sweet hot rod wheel and tire from the forest!

As always BHA affiars are family events and we were stoked to have both a father/son, and a mother/son team working the woods for this event! Thanks to all attendees and our partners from @your_wild_ohio for helping making space for our beloved woodcocks!

Great work, team! 💪🏻

Add another amazing Ohio muzzleloader season to the books! It’s always a great time taking out fellow supporters of @backcountryhunters and showing them how we like to hit the woods. We managed to take four deer total, with one of our auction winner guests taking home a dandy buck!

There’s always one thing you can absolutely count on with our annual muzzy trip… tons of great food (squirrel pot pie?!!!), lots of laughs, sore legs, and a steady stream of our southern Ohio favorite - SKI!!! @skicitrussoda.
Want to join us next year? Keep a close eye on backcountryhunters.org and maybe you and a friend can snag a spot. We’re already counting down the days to do it again!

We had a great time with the @clevemetroparks at Sturgeon Fest over the weekend! Releasing sturgeon into the Cuyahoga River was not only a story of population recovery, but a symbol of how far the Cuyahoga River has come from polluted waterways to one that can support a more thriving ecosystem. We still have a lot of work to do (check out our recent post of the trash cleanup at this same location), but we sure have come a long way.

Join us and Dr. Metin Erin as we learn about prehistoric weapons and ballistics, how stone was knapped onto tools and weapons, and how the lab then tests what they create. We will get to learn how to use an atlatl including throwing darts at targets. Click the link in our bio to learn more and for the link to Bear Grease Episode 298 where you can listen to Dr. Metin Erin!

Our Ohio BHA Board Member highlight this week is James Morton!

James was born in Tacoma, Washington to parents both in the Army. There would be plenty of memories made fishing in North Carolina, Louisiana, and Hawaii, along with a few introductions to the woods in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Louisiana. His outdoor roots wouldn’t fully take hold until he was 32. Since then, he has immersed himself in every opportunity he could hunting and fishing public lands and waters in Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio.

He is extremely passionate about sharing his love for the outdoors with others by instructing Hunter Education and volunteering as a mentor. He loves sitting in the woods with a book and taking pictures of the flora and fauna. James hopes to improve his woodsmanship by learning more about foraging and trapping!

Ohio BHA on ice! This past weekend a few of our board members braved a treacherous journey across state lines into enemy territory. Although the bite wasn’t as great as one would like, the hospitality from @heath_ries sure made up for it. If you ever need a fishing buddy or some information about outdoor recreation in Harrison, Michigan… He’s your guy! Thanks again, Heath!!!

One last post from the Wayne tire cleanup. Thank you so much to everyone that showed up and put in work. Thank you to @theminetavern for hosting the pint night. If you’re ever in Nelsonville, make sure you swing by and try out their fried pickles. You won’t be disappointed!

One hundred and twenty three tires. That’s how many the group of tough BHA volunteers pulled out of the steep hills and creek bottoms in Wayne National Forest this weekend. Hucking tires up the steeps is hard, but being surrounded by sweaty smiling faces makes the load lighter. Public Lands are where we feel at home. They are our shared lands and our shared responsibility, and we’re here to do our part!

This event would not have been possible without Evan from @siembida_custom_knives. Evan is our longest state sponsor, a killer knife maker, and a general purpose public land badass. Thank you to the Ohio BHA family that came together to make this event such a successful endeavor. Already looking forward to next year!

This Public Lands Month Public Lands Packout event is a combined effort with the Ohio BHA Chapter, Trout Unlimited Mad River Chapter, along with other organizations. We will look to collect any trash and refuse we find in and around the river area to help promote a clean and healthy environment for Ohio’s streams and rivers.

✨We will be meeting along the Mad River just west of Urbana. Meeting spot is the pull off access on the corner of US 36 and River Road. (Google maps lists a farm across the street as “Ward Farms” if that helps point your gps in the right direction.)✨

After the cleanup, we will be meeting at the Mad River Farmers Market in West Liberty for food & beers. There will be plenty of merch available to purchase and good times to be had. Please RSVP at the link in our bio so we know you’re coming! We’re excited to see you there!

We had a blast at this year’s @archeryhike! We were able to connect and chat with so many people from all over. Not only Ohio, but even Georgia and Alabama as well! Ohio board member @jameskingmorton was even able to smack the squatch from over 100 yards! We served up some food and drinks, had some awesome raffles courtesy of @yeti, @stoneglacier, and even a target from the archery hike folks themselves. We were even able to squeeze in some fishing at Lake Logan once we wrapped up the hike on Saturday. It was a great day!!!

Thank you for the support everyone! We hope to see ya’ll again next year!
