𝗧𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝟬𝟭: 𝘼𝙩 𝙇𝙖𝙨𝙩, 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙗𝙤𝙩 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙨, by 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙪 𝙁𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙧, just finished its West Coast trip, now flying back at Bungee!

.…..

The interest in birds and their ability to fly has its own history. Humans have been watching them long before technology advanced enough to make such attempts possible. And with the advent of mechanical apparatus, observation was no longer only a matter of sight. Flight movements were first deciphered with a gun pointed at the sky.

To watch, then, is never neutral. It is shaped by the tools that extend it, and by the intentions that sustain it. 𝗢𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 emerge from this expanded field of looking: as objects of study, as engineered solutions, as experiments, and as projections of desire. They are funded, designed, and circulated within different economies—scientific, educational, military, recreational—each determining how and why these bird-like forms take to the sky.

Our first Discussion Event of 2026 …
Join us online this Friday 15th May at 13.30 GMT for a live dialogue between two brilliant practitioner-educators responding to this year’s thematic text ‘Agitation-Oscillation-Embodiment: The Spaces Between’.
Can Yang @solxus : designer, art director and academic — explores the shifting terms of perception in the age of machine learning. When images are shaped before they arrive, what does it mean to truly see?
James Langdon @jameslangdon.eu : graphic designer, educator and writer — asks what happens when we use labour-saving technology to expand the scope of what one person can laboriously make.
Hosted by Katie Jones Barlow and Peter Nencini.
If you are not a member - join us - link in bio to sign up and receive your Zoom invite ahead of the event.
Please note: this event will not be recorded.
See you there! Image credit @solxus

A huge shoutout to one of our members James. He’ll be running the Malvern Hills Ultra 50km this weekend!! There’s around a 2000 metres ascent so a planned training regime has been vital to enable peak performance. ⛰️

He joined us at the end of last year to help improve his running performance as well as a few niggles he was carrying.

We’ve worked on some personal training sessions to help with a dedicated training programme to complement all the goals involved. James has been so dedicated and showing up week in and out, even spending 40 minutes on the ski erg to help with low impact endurance training as he became closer to the event 🥴

Sending all the positive vibes this weekend and hope you feel prepped as possible going into it ⚡️

Love, the Rise family 💚

🌐📘ECAL A Typographic Atlas 📘🌐
————————————
A type specimen is a document used by printers and type founders to present their catalogs. Initially produced as single sheets and rarely dated, they evolved into books as the Industrial Revolution, technical advances, and the rise of literacy multiplied typographic styles.
Today, type specimens mostly exist in digital form.
This is a type specimen. But not only.
It is also an Atlas: a collection of letterforms mapping ten years of typographic creation at ECAL/Universityof Art and Design Lausanne, Switzerland. Through two programs —the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Type Design — ECAL has trained more than four hundred students graduates in the drawing, spacing, coding, and mastering of letterforms. The result is a wide map: from classical, easy-to-read text intended for small-size running copy, to wild display shapes; from experimental, barely readable forms to revisited classical models —it spreads across every genre of the contemporary typographic spectrum.
Typography today is truly global. With students from over thirty countries, ECAL captures cultural connections across the world and within the type design industry. Following the footsteps of early type specimens that juxtaposed Greek, Hebrew, and Latin scripts, ECAL A Typographic Atlas presents alphabets, abugidas, abjads, and hanzi/kanji across a rich variety of writing systems, alongside letterforms in use in logos across multiple genres, since type design forms the very foundation of all graphic work.
By juxtaposing these diverse approaches, ECAL affirms its role as an international crossroads for typographic design — where teaching, research, and practice continuously inform one another.
