英國藝術家 James 在我們2026年「靈應南海」藝術駐地期間創作的部分作品—他以中國的神話故事「八仙過海」為切入點，延續對寓言敘事的興趣，並運用纖維、木屑等材料構築肌理，在繪畫中營造富有層次的空間與獨特的形態。
A selection of works created by British artist James during our 2026 Awakening the South Sea residency in Putian, China. Taking the Chinese myth of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea as his starting point, he continues his exploration of fables, using fibres, sawdust and other materials to build texture and create layered spaces and distinctive forms within his paintings.
’八仙過海，各顯神通‘的故事收到民間的眾多喜愛，跨越千年、從上倒下廣受歡迎並非偶然。「老、少、男、女、富、贵、贫、贱」的八种人生境遇，几乎覆盖了传统社会的全部阶层。神仙不再是高不可攀的天神，而是保留了凡人七情六欲、可以亲近效仿的榜样——普通人「积德行善，亦可得道」。这种「从平凡到超越」的象征，正是生命力所在。這與James希望在作品中通過凡人生活感的形象塑造所傳遞的氣質相輔相成。藝術家在中国「仙由凡人修炼而成」的独特观念（屈原《离骚》已有雏形）中，看到神話故事如何满足人們深层的审美需求与自由渴望。
The story of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea, each drawing on their own unique powers, has long captured the popular imagination. Its enduring appeal across a thousand years and all levels of society is no coincidence. Representing eight conditions of human life—old age, youth, manhood, womanhood, wealth, high status, poverty and low social standing—the Immortals encompass almost every stratum of traditional society. Rather than distant, unattainable deities, they retain human emotions and desires, becoming figures people can relate to and emulate. Even ordinary people can attain the Dao through kindness and virtuous deeds. This possibility of moving from the everyday towards transcendence gives the story its lasting vitality. It also resonates with the spirit James seeks to convey through figures rooted in the textures of everyday life.In the distinctive Chinese idea that ordinary people can become immortals through self-cultivation——an idea whose early traces appear in Qu Yuan’s Li Sao，the artist sees how myths speak to people’s deep aesthetic needs and longing for freedom.

Im Weissen Rössl am Wolfgangsee wird das auf ganz besondere Weise sichtbar.

Malerei, textile Arbeiten und dreidimensionale Formen – unterschiedliche Materialien, unterschiedliche Handschriften und ganz eigene Wege, Gedanken und Ideen auszudrücken.

Was uns am Art Circle besonders fasziniert, ist genau diese Vielfalt. Künstler aus verschiedenen Teilen der Welt kommen an einem Ort zusammen und bringen ihre Perspektiven mit. Sie lassen sich inspirieren, probieren aus und schaffen Werke, die so unterschiedlich sind wie die Menschen dahinter.

Und während draußen der Wolfgangsee und die Berge die Kulisse bilden, entsteht drinnen etwas ganz Eigenes.

Residency Artist | James Lang @jameslangstudio

James Lang is a British artist based in London, having previously lived and worked in Beijing for nearly five years. His practice draws from medieval visual culture, illuminated manuscripts and sacred imagery, exploring their relationship with contemporary memory and experience.

Lang’s work has been presented across a range of established institutional and independent exhibition contexts in the UK and China, including Saatchi Gallery and Hampstead Art Society in London, as well as BONIAN SPACE and Hongkun Museum of Fine Art in Beijing. His sustained engagement with both European and Chinese cultural contexts has become an important dimension of his practice, informing an ongoing dialogue between inherited visual traditions and contemporary painting.

Leatherwork, metalwork, and gold-lined skulls - The Raw & The Cooked, curated by @harryjoneslondon looks to the medieval past to make sense of the present day. ⚔️

Jones’s own monumental 12-metre painting revisits the brutal 1531 execution of Richard Roose under Henry VIII, drawing sharp parallels between medieval public terror and modern systems of political control.
Bringing together ten other artists, the exhibition explores identity, power, and human connection through the lens of the so-called “Dark Ages” - and asks what they can reveal about our own era of global upheaval.

I have two pieces of work in ‘The Raw and The Cooked’ at @saatchi_gallery curated by @harryjoneslondon on until September 12th.

It was a very sweaty task to rebake the bready bones of a body first put together on the amazing @platform_rf residency in Finland at the end of 2024, in deep snow. Making in a pretty terrifying heatwave, arranging bone by bone, was a total different task, and this iteration combines Finnish flour collected at the time, as well as some from France and of course the spoil from stone setting, milling at @brixtonwindmill - a body from many places, as they so often are. There’s also stones collected from lots of special places, that line the ‘grave’. A death in the gallery.

Having a random little project—doing a portrait exchange with another artist @jameslangstudio XD
We’re modelling for each other and creating portraits of one another, and we can take hours XD
Got an artist to be my model so I can explore more with watercolour and coloured pencils, and he’ll paint me in his unique medieval style XD Can’t wait to see how it comes out!!
He’s also exhibiting one of his works at the upcoming Saatchi Gallery exhibition: #therawandthecooked

來嘗試我以前比較少用的媒材。最近畫很多速寫但還是會想畫速度比較慢一點的，我還在體會哪種速度最適合我。因為我沒什麼朋友，更別說是藝術圈的朋友ＬＯＬ雖然他也不是全職藝術家，但是可以看得到，你有多專注在多少東西就會收穫多少。所以對我來說他的生活對我來說還蠻新奇的，我有可能達到這樣的專注度嗎？因為我是一直被新的東西給抓走注意力哈 #saachigalleryexhibition #colourpencil #portraitdrawing #drawing
