It's 5 chains from me!!!

Wow. This book was A-mazing! J. H. Markert is fast becoming an auto-buy author for me. This author knows how to write the stories that live in my nightmares. He blends the chilliest, most horrific details with the thriller aspect in the BEST ways! When you decide to read this…clear your schedule. You won’t want any interruptions, and you’ll want to finish asap! Thank you to @tlctours, @netgalley, @crookedlanebooks, and @jamesmarkert74 for the early #gifted alc copy. All opinions are my own.

🫰🏼🫰🏼 They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky! 🕷️🖤

Halloween is almost here, and I couldn’t resist putting together a little Addams Family-inspired reading guide! 🎃 A MUST WATCH for me during the Halloween season

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite books across 5 categories of spooky themes! We’ve got witches, ghosts, haunted houses, cults, and monsters. A little something for everyone! And on various levels of frightening 😱

Some of these are genuinely creepy, some are just plain fun, and all of them are perfect for spooky season! 👻📚

So tell me… what’s YOUR favorite kind of spooky? And have you read any of these?!

Save this one for your next spooky read! 🖤

🍂📚BOOKTOBERFEST FOR GROWN UPS📚🍂

Today was a fun bookish outing with @themorbidmama, @blackcatbooks__, and Ashley! We started the morning off by going to @frenchhencafe in St. Paul. I got the Sweet Crepes, which had a cinnamon apple filling, and a caramel latte.

We then went to @inboundbrewco’s Booktoberfest for Grownups. It was a bit smaller than the Book Fair for Grown Ups was in July, and I wish there were more horror/thriller/spooky authors, publishers, and/or vendors, but I still ended up with a pretty good haul! And it was so great to finally meet and chat with @caseygiltnerwrites and @eli_krohn in person!

💸what i got💸
•Maa Maa Black Sheep by @authorseematiwari
•The Chain House by @jamesmarkert74 from @thegreendragonbookshop (which had such great selection of horror books!)
•Cracks in the Earth Above by Eli Krohn
•Dracula by Bram Stoker from @commabookshop (this edition was irresistible!)
•Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant by R.L. Stine from @silly.wacky.zany.books
•Cathedral candle decor from @kelseacreations
•Book Lover bookmark from @petalandpawdesigns
•Minnesota sweatshirt from @sewuprisinghandmade (I got this for my mom, who lives in Louisiana and is an LSU fan; the Vikings color scheme works perfectly for MN stuff for her)

❓QOTD: How was your Saturday?!

Spooky Season™ books continue with four more stunning releases:

WHEN THE NIGHT COMES KNOCKING by Katherine Daniel, a story of estranged siblings traveling through the Appalachian mountains who choose the wrong roadside convenience store to stop at.

PLEASE ENJOY YOUR STAY by @taragoedjen, about a true-crime podcaster investigating the murder of her cousin, who died under mysterious circumstances while staying at a majestic castle in the Austrian Alps.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE by @rachellouiseadams, the second in the Coldren County series following the Halloween-set NO REST FOR THE WICKED, about a murder investigation at a small-town Wisconsin slaughterhouse.

THE CHAIN HOUSE by @jamesmarkert74, a multi-POV horror-thriller concerning a cult leader on death row and the surprise manuscript revealing the location of his victims’ bodies that may never see the light of day if he’s executed. Also: if you’re looking for another terrific read leading up to Halloween, I highly recommend Markert’s excellent scarecrow nightmare fuel THE NIGHTMARE MAN.

🔹BOOK REVIEW 🔹

Ransom Burning | J. H. Markert | 26 January 2027 | Crooked Lane Books | Historical Thriller | ARC

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🔹 In the small Kentucky town of Ransom, ten years have passed since a high school basketball game ended in tragedy. Lewis, the first Black student to attend St. Anthony’s, was found dead the morning after scoring the decisive basket. His death was ruled a suicide, but plenty of people believe the truth was far more sinister. Some secrets don’t stay buried, and some towns have a lot more to answer for than they’d like to admit.

ATMOSPHERIC | HEARTBREAKING | THOUGHT-PROVOKING

🔹J. H. Markert has absolutely delivered with this one. I was drawn into Ransom and its troubled history, and the more I learnt about what happened that night, the angrier I became.

Told across two timelines, 1964 and ten years later, the story gradually pieces together the events surrounding Lewis’s death and the lasting damage left behind.

There are a number of characters to keep track of, but each one brings something to the story. It was interesting to see how the past had shaped the lives of the men who played on the basketball team, and how the weight of what happened had followed them into adulthood.

This is more of a slow-burn historical thriller but I found it easy to settle into, and the revelations kept me invested as the picture became clearer. The racism, prejudice and deep buried secrets make for some uncomfortable reading. It leaves you thinking about the people who suffered, the people who stayed silent and the cost of keeping the truth hidden. There were moments that genuinely hurt to read but I was pleased to see the story doesn’t shy away from the uglier side of human behaviour.

🔹Ransom Burning is a book that deserves to be talked about. is a haunting, emotionally charged read that proves some of the darkest horrors are the ones people inflict on each other.

Thankyou @netgalley @crookedlanebooks @jamesmarkert74 for the advanced copy of Ransom Burning

Dual timeline | Multiple POVs | Racial injustice | Buried truths | Unresolved tragedy | Moral accountability
