When I got back into reading on my Maternity Leave earlier this year, I added soooo many books to my TBR and they have SAT there for months. So I decided to go deep into the TBR list and grab the ones that were available at my library! So excited for these three 📚✨ @ocls

though sweeping in scale james mcbride’s /the heaven & earth grocery store/ is grounded by the intimacy of its complicated characters and their unexpected interconnectedness. the rawness and beauty of the intersection of black and jewish communities coexisting in 1930’s pennsylvania is gripping, insightful, and delightfully humorous. mcbride weaves a tale that is the perfect balance of murder mystery, domestic drama, and social commentary. this one is definitely worth the hype!

Had the amazingggggg opportunity to attend @jamesmcbrideauthor author event at my local library 🥹💞. Hearing about his journey as a journalist, musician, and author, navigating life and learning about his family history and religious background. An amazing event all around 🥰. Have you read The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store? 👀

I did end up purchasing Deacon King Kong & will be recommending it every month until it is picked as a book club read for The Melanated Minds 🤭

Swipe to hear my reaction to his arrival & some footage of our conversation after the talk 💞.

✨ Vos Gallmeisterchefs,

Nathalie & Anthony 📚💛

Since Lois Lowry in 2002, Fort Collins Reads has proudly chosen authors who champion the right to read. While not all of our authors have experienced challenges or censorship, many of them have. “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo A. Anaya, our 2004 author, even faced book burnings in 1981, where a New Mexico school board called for the novel’s destruction.

It’s important to remember that book censorship isn’t often marked by flames. Instead it often happens behind the scenes where challenges are initiated “by pressure groups, government officials and decision makers.” In fact, less than 3% of all challenges are initiated by concerned parents. Censorship is on the rise. 4,235 unique titles were challenged last year (only 5 titles short of matching 2023’s record). This Banned Books Week, we encourage you to champion books, the right to read, and the importance of authors telling their stories without censorship.

September has come and gone 💕🫶🏻🍂

Not only did I finish 7 books, but I completed 30 days at my new job, flew to Baltimore to surprise my bestie at her housewarming party (which resulted in me tagging along to a music festival in the rain), and took 24 Pilates and yoga classes 📚💻✈️🎧🏠💪🏻

Two of the seven books I had the pleasure of reading this month were ARCs! Thank you so much to @marleywritesbooks and @r.a.raineauthor for trusting me with your literary babies ♥️ congrats to you both on your new releases! Count me in for the next books in the series, because I’m obsessed with Storm and Ness 🤩🔮⚡️

With it being such a busy month, I’m carrying 3 books into October. What about you? What was the highlight of your month? What was your favorite read? Are you excited for colder weather?
